Any recent sci-fi gems worth mentioning?
Annihilation was awesome. I'm going to check out Mute this afternoon. Still haven't seen Ex Machina. Have there been other sci-fi gems as of late worth mentioning? Putting together a binge-list.

shareThanks to everyone for the great lists!
shareI saw a movie called Prospect recently that was pretty good. It's definitely inspired by Firefly, but it's its own thing.
Also, get to Ex Machine already!!

Upgrade proved to be much better than I expected.
Not a movie, but a 2-season STARZ series: Counterpart, the first and only sci-fi spy story I’ve ever seen. It’s VERY subtle, and many sci-fi fans don’t cotton to it. The premise is that, years ago, something (what it was is not explained till Season 2) happened that created 2 separate Earths, connected by a tunnel known only to the planets’ governments, which created covert diplomatic relations with each other. The planets’ populations are identical, BUT you and your counterpart can easily have different developmental life experiences. Your daughter may die, and his daughter may live, for example. Your wife may somehow meet him. One world may declare covert war on the other. No space aliens, Phasers, tractor beams, creatures created by crazed scientists. Instead, it’s one of the most fascinating and intelligent examinations of interpersonal human dynamics and values that I expect ever to see. The acting and writing are first rate. Be warned that STARZ did not order a third season. It comes to a satisfying, but “open,” conclusion. You won’t be disappointed if you watch it; and you may well join me and many others (take a look at the Counterpart boards here) in hoping an outlet smarter than STARZ picks it up.
That sounds very interesting. I enjoy sci-fi that doesn't rely on action as well. What you described reminds me of Moon. I'll keep my eyes open, or perhaps see if they have the seasons online somewhere.
shareIt’s available on demand if you subscribe to STARZ. I think one of the reasons why the show did not find an audience is because the morons at STARZ did not make it available to streaming services like Hulu and Netflix and Prime. I’m seriously thinking about buying both seasons on Blu-ray. I hope that you find it and enjoy it.
I remember when 2001 was released. People wondered where “the monster” was. Well, as Forbidden Planet had shown a similarly-dense population a decade before, WE are the monster. Sci-fi is mind, not action. Sci-fi is less “attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion” than it is “Like tears, in rain. Time to die.”
Your last paragraph hit home with me. What a wonderful description of what sci-fi should be.

I agree with Neckk!
😎
None since Annihilation imho, and I agree, it was awesome! Ex Machina is good also.
😎
Just don't watch timeline with Paul Walker

I loved both of those, but especially Annihilation: 9/10.
