Stonekeeper's Winter Game: I recommend THIS Mystery Movie #194 [White Sun of the Desert (1970), guessed by FredBurroughs]

So you guys like to play games? Here is an investigation game that can be time consuming but it's lots of fun. Basically, I have a movie in mind and you have to guess which one it is. For each movie you guys are going to guess, I will give a hint that CONNECTS your guess with the movie I have in mind.

Example of connections: Actor, length, genre, aspect ratio, language, country, year, director, writer in common, rating, number of votes, nominations. It can even be something like: both movies involve a love triangle.

- The winner can either start a new game or say "pass". In case of a pass, the OP gets to start another one.
- After 12 hints, the point goes to the OP and he/she gets to start another one.
- Movie must have at least 3500 votes on IMDB.

Hint 1: Santa Paws 2: The Santa Pups (2012) - Fewer than 100,000 votes on IMDb.
Hint 2: The Gods Must Be Crazy (1980) - Takes place outside the Americas.
Hint 3: Byzantium (2012) - Drama genre in common.
Hint 4: The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc (1999) - Shares the keyword: "soldier".
Hint 5: The Great Train Robbery (1978) - Released earlier than 1980.
Hint 6: Papillon (2017) - IMDb rating over 7.0.
Hint 7: Soldier of Orange (1977) - Set in a non-English-speaking country.
Hint 8: Zulu (1964) - Released later than 1960.
Hint 9: The Guns of Navarone (1961) - The setting is a war in the first half of the 20th century.
Hint 10: Two Women (1960) - Runtime between 80 and 105 minutes.
Hint 11: All Quiet on the Western Front (1979) - The movie was filmed in a communist country.

FredBurroughs wins with White Sun of the Desert (1970), a great Soviet movie set in Central Asia in the time of the Russian civil war.

Sounds like the title of a movie about my dating life.

It's a struggle, yes, but always keep in mind what makes relationships work is when the people committed are happy with themselves. Otherwise, it's an attempt by one or both to fill a void, which can cause issues later on. You certainly love movies. Somewhere out there is your equal, waiting to share your vast knowledge of cinema.

That's the one! You win!

never heard of it.

It's a very good movie. It's set in the Russian civil war, somewhat mimicking the style of American Westerns (which I know you're a fan of). It's about a Red Army soldier in Central Asia (probably Turkmenistan, though it isn't specified) who's given the job of rescuing the wives of a Basmachi warlord. The movie is very popular in the former Soviet Union, and somehow it became tradition for cosmonauts to watch it whenever they're about to go into space.

I like to imagine the thought process from the higher-ups was along the lines of: "We're about to launch these men into space with the possibility of no return. Might was well show them a cool movie beforehand."

I found it on youtube. thanks.

I hope you enjoy it!

reply

OK, I'm hooked now. I'll have to watch this soon.

reply

You should! I hope you like it. :)

Dang it! While I was looking into Turkmenistan history. Just a bit of peripheral knowledge due to a fascination with the 'Doorway to Hell'. Good game!

reply

I'm glad you enjoyed it. I was worried I had made it too difficult. There aren't a whole lot of Soviet movies, especially well-known ones, to pick from that are usable in this game (i.e. over 3500 votes), so in the early part of the game I tried not to give too much away, but towards the end of the game I was frantically trying to narrow it down lol. TwinA saved my bacon by guessing a movie that was filmed in Czechoslovakia, giving me the chance to say the movie was filmed in a country of the socialist bloc. That narrowed it down to only a few possibilities.

We all enjoy a challenge, Kira, even when it's tough. Why, I never heard of White Sun of the Desert. Judging by what's been said about it here, it's an interesting film. Always glad to assist. (^_^)
