Where would you rather live: Hawaii or Alaska?

And why?

reply

Alaska....I like the cold.

Hawaii. I was planning to move there and still may. Why? Why not?! The weather the aloha, the people, everything. Alaska may be good to visit, but to live? No way!

Alaska. I'd feel trapped in Hawaii, or on any other small island or islands in the middle of an ocean.

HAWALASKAII?

reply

Alaska. Hawaii has no change of seasons, no white Christmas. I've heard the cost of living there is outrageous.

reply

Hawaii is likely more expensive than AK.

reply

Hawaii - I live by the beach.

Hawaii. It has the best climate of any place I've ever been (admittedly I am not as widely traveled as some here). Being in the Central Pacific it is not unbearably hot and humid like those South Pacific islands you see in WWII movies. It is also on a trade winds route which sweeps away humidity.

I would feel "trapped" in Hawaii. Middle of nowhere. What if there is a tsunami?

reply

It used to be called "rock fever." Being stuck on a rock and being unable to "escape" by jumping in the car taking off for someplace different, like you can on the mainland.

I'd like to try Alaska, especially the far north, above the Arctic Circle. But I'd want to have a bail out plan. In grad school, one of my fellow students was from Alaska. When the rest of us were departing to visit families for Christmas vacation, she stayed put. She told me that having only three hours sunlight per day messed with her moods.

I could handle the summers, I think. I had a darkroom set up where I developed b/w film, made prints, and so on before digital made things 1000 times easier. There was a large window in that room, but you can buy blackout curtains that block all light. I installed one of those and could work there at high noon, no problems. So I'd just use those on my bedroom windows. But during the winters, who knows? Seasonal affective disorder is real, and since I've never been in that situation I don't know how I would react.

I can Alaska being a "breeding ground" for serial killers.
