I'm really fascinated by the Second World War. What movies should I watch? Narrative or documentary is fine. The ones I've watched the most are Saving Private Ryan, The Thin Red Line, Schindler's List, and Empire of the Sun. I'm realizing now that's 3 Spielberg movies. What should I watch?
My dad always watched theae when I was a kid, and I was never that into them. I've since grown very fond of Steve McQueen so it's probably time I give The Great Escape another shot.
It was very eye-opening in that way, showing how it wasn't easy to pick up their civilian lives after all they'd been through. A soldier gone for years with little communication from loved ones at home; their lives suspended - in limbo - not knowing if they'd even survive, while families back home had to keep moving forward as best they could. The movie did well in showing how different the circumstances were from one soldier to another.
It's a pro-war propaganda movie. Instead of being disgusted by what the war did to these poor people's lives, we are asked to honor their sacrifice. They put in cheap pot shots against "isolationists".
Defiance (2008)
The Pianist (2002)
The Bridge Over the River Kwai (1957)
Come and See (1985) - very disturbing
Fury (2014)
Max Manus: Man of War (2008)
Land of Mine (2015)
Stalingrad (2013)
Winter in Wartime (2008)
Captain Corellis Mandolin (2001) Kinda corny, but I still liked it.
Since your into WWII, I'm Assuming you'e seen Band of Brothers and The Pacific?
I'd also bump up Winter in Wartime. The director is the same guy behind the brilliant 2016 movie Brimstone. I actually emailed him a question about the film and he promptly replied.
