How many phone numbers do you know?

By memory?

Tonight I met a nice neighbour while out for a walk. She asked me to enter my number into her cell and I had to think about it to make sure I had it right. I've had this number for about a year.

Which made me think about how many numbers I now remember.

1. Childhood number, which is useless info and taking up precious grey matter.

2. Last phone number.

3. More or less current number.

That's it.

I'd be in big trouble if I lost my contacts for some reason πŸ˜„

I used to know the numbers of my family members and close friends. Now? Nada.

You?

reply

Part of what makes it so difficult to remember phone numbers is that there are so many more to remember. In the past you need only remember one number to reach anyone in a particular household. Now, everyone has their own phone & number. Add contact lists/speed dial to the mix and it's almost hopeless!

reply

Good point. People did used to usually have one phone per household.

reply

I remember when it was a big deal for a family to get a second line for the kids - you'd see it listed in the phone book that way.

reply

I remember it being a big deal to get a second line, but how was it listed in the phone book? Maybe it was different here.

reply

Smith, John & Jane 432 Main St.....555-5555
kids line......................................555-1111

Back then they didn't need to list the area code, either.

reply

Huh, I never saw that. It gave the names of the kids?

reply

Not usually, it just said kids line. Sometimes it said second line.

reply

Well that's good. Even a long time ago it wouldn't have been a good idea to give out people's kids' names.

I'm not too sure what this reply means...Oh well

reply

No worries, just a little good-natured joke.

reply

Actually these are sex phone numbers...Wait t’ill 18!

Another good thread! I know my #...my wifes...my moms...wifes work...my home # and somehow...a few friends from my teens???

My wife is a machine with numbers! She was my bank teller decades ago. I never knew my account numbers. Tate memorized them to aid in my banking...she still remembers them😱

reply

Thanks, DF!

You may have won the thread for remembering the most numbers!

If your wife was here, she'd have smoked all of us πŸ˜‚. I can't believe she *still* remembers your account numbers. She's gotta be some kind of numbers genius. Impressive!

So that's how you met. What a sweet story. Sounds like love at first sight ... or transaction? πŸ’“

reply

Guess what? I still have all my contacts listed in a personal phone book.

reply

Like ... like a personal phone book made out of paper? 😱

You are hard core old skool, Slimone! πŸ‘

reply

Yes! Made of paper! LOL

reply

I had to make sure, so thanks. And I'm super impressed!

4

1. My parents house phone number, which has been the same since I was born, and they transferred it to their new house.

2. My own cell phone number which has been the same since I got it when I was 17 and transferred carriers a couple times.

3. My best friend from high school's cell, which I used to call from my parent's landline a lot before I got a cell. He never changed it.

4. My mom's cell, which hasn't changed since she got it in late 90s.

I keep trying to memorize my boyfriend's cell and I can seem to do it, which he gives me a hard time about. I finally just locked down his birthday so I figure that should be good enough for now.

reply

too many.
I can remember numbers pretty well. I'd say at least 40, only a few are mine. The rest are random people from town. When anyone writes a check, you have to type in their phone number and I see these people 4-5 times a week so yeah, tons lol.

reply

You have WON THE THREAD! Congratulations!! πŸ‘‘

reply

haha, thanks so much :D

reply

I need to come up with some kind of medal for you for this! :D

reply

aw! youre the sweetest. i deserve no special treatment cat. its lovely that you offer though!

reply

Yes, you DO! No one's come even close to remembering as many numbers as you do. Not even DF's lovely wife, who is beyond question a runner up :)

I suspect I'm in last place πŸ˜‚

reply

If only I could remember other things instead of these random numbers lol
Oh no doubt how sweet she is, I'm sharing my first place prize with her. :D

reply

Hey, I wish I could remember as many random numbers as you do! I can't though, and it looks like no one else here can either, so major PROPS to you! πŸ‘

You can share your 1st place with whomever you want to :)

reply

I don't even know my own phone number! I only know the number of my parents' landline because I had to memorize it in a time before everybody had cellphones.

reply

Really!? You’re THAT old?!

At least you’re remarkably well-preserved.

See, if you were a guy, you’d have had a little black book back in the Stone Age, and you’d write special phone numbers down in it. No memorization! Much satisfaction!

Yes, some of the entries were in lipstick. Did you need to ask?

reply

How did we survive, Arcane?!

reply

Sex.

reply

Weird, I don't recall any of that!

reply

I didn’t say with each other!!

reply

Oh good, for a moment I thought I had been drinking too much again. I'm sure I would've remembered it!

reply

I still remember the phone number my parents had when I was a kid.

Current phone number.
