What did you watch this week sugar? (12/08-18/08)

Your spouse/parents/friends are tired of hearing you speak your thoughts on the latest movies you watched? Here is the place to do it among friends! Let's judge these movies!!

American Hero (2015 Netflix *MC Special): Here is my review from the first time I saw it and I still stand by it although I would add that it’s too short and ended a bit abruptly: By the trailer, I thought this was going to be a low budget superhero comedy/parody. By the rating (4.9), I thought it was going to be idiotic but maybe funny. So I gave it a try and I was surprised to find a well-acted drama that struck a chord with me. It actually struck many chords and the characters felt scary real. Never would've I thought that I would have all these emotions watching this. It does not rely on special-effects or action at all and the comedy aspect is secondary. It's in its tone, its words, its music; it’s in its heart that this movie stood out. 8/10

Blade of the immortal (2017 Netflix): This movie was a feast for the eyes and a torture for the ears. By that I mean the little girl’s constant shrill shrieking, screeching and squealing was like a needle piercing inside my ears. It almost ruined the whole experience for me. An unfortunate 6.5/10

Kingsman: The golden circle (2017 DVD) Even if I really loved the first one, I had low expectations for this one mainly because of the trailer but also because of the critics. I finally decided to stop putting it aside and it was a great decision. I liked this one too! The action does not exactly fit my taste but it was way better than I imagined. As for the story, I had so much fun with it and the cast was amazing. I mean, Moore, Tatum, Berry, Bridges and Elton John (the guy is hilarious in this!)!!! What more can you ask?? A free thicket to Poppy Land? Crazy place they got there. DWAM! 7.5/10

Extinction (2018 Netflix *MC Special) This movie is entertaining enough for one viewing. It has a few good ideas that were under-developed or just not used properly and it has dumb parts and moments that are too flagrant to ignore. Michael Pena is a good and likable as a secondary character but lack the talent and stature to hold a movie on his shoulders. Because let's be honest, he did not get a lot of support. 6/10

reply

I'm digging your movie club Stone-Bud!
Lets keep it up:)

*Some Spoilers!!!*

Extinction (18) Eh...Pena was pretty good, Caplan annoyed me and Colter was underused (and his beard is gross and itchy looking but whatever)
It made no sense for The Synthetics to erase their memory of WW III...you would want to remain vigilant for the return of your enemies, right?
Entertaining though... 7/10

American Hero (15) i enjoyed the personal relationships between the characters most of all
Its refreshing, and often true to real life, to see people of diverse backgrounds really care for each other instead of yet another film about racial crisis...i loved the friendships here
Overall a very good movie and the Big Dorffer came through!
8/10

Copkiller (73) two hippies are on a cross country coke deal and killing spree
Nihilistic, nasty Drive-In movie trash
Loved it (9/10)

The Boy (16) a creepy doll screws up a babysitters life...mildly creepy (6/10)

Housesitters (18) extremely low budget indy, ridiculous creature effects, stupid ending...but cute rapport between the heroines and hey, it probably cost very little and was a silly chuckle...5/10

Cruisin' High (76) A punk takes over his gang to battle the Mexican gang and is NOT up to the task!
Cheap, Drive-In junk
Not bad 6/10

The Loved Ones (12) if the plain girl asks you to Prom JUST SAY YES!
What a psycho:(
7.5/10

Fox Trap (16) cheap indy slasher, pretty fun stuff
6/10

Better Call Saul S4...i LOVE this show, Odenkirk is The Man!

Over and Out Stone

reply

Hey my man!

What did Colter do in Extinction again? And I haden't thought of it but your right, it does not make sense.

Im glad you also enjoyed American Hero. What you said is in line with my thoughts also. Awesome!

Cool to see updates on CopKiller and The loved ones. I would've watched both if I could.

reply

*SPOILERS*

Colter was one of the few synthetics who retained its memories of the war with humans 50 years earlier and was preparing for a possible human invasion

Cop Killer was terrific 70s trash...i love crap like that

The Loved Ones was cool
Imagine if John Hughes directed Saw!

none of yours for me this week. i'm definitely going to catch 'blade...' soon. i really liked the first kingsman as well, & had also avoided the followup due to the fairly antagonistic reviews, but i'll give it a shot if/when it shows up on streaming.

scream 4 (2011) 3/5 if you were to say that this was one trip to the well too many, i wouldn't hotly argue with you. but even if there's a bit of tarnish & a few too many tv actresses & the horror movie trivia is deeply tired, the movie itself is fairly reliably entertaining. you could do worse.

tehran taboo (2017) 3.5/5 3 women try to work their way through life while coping with iran's strict religious laws. maybe just a bit heavy-handed at times, especially in its slightly melodramatic ending, but ultimately an interesting story told pretty well. nice rotoscope animation as well.

the conjuring 2 (2016) 3/5 too long, certainly, and it burns me a little to see the warrens being portrayed as such intrepid people of integrity (they weren't), but these movies are reliably entertaining. what this does lack is the genuine scares of the first one. it does provide a few of the standard jump moments, but it seems to be lacking a bit of atmosphere. still a good, well made & properly acted movie.

v/h/s viral (2014) 2/5 somewhat tricky business rating this one, because most of it is pretty poor, certainly not up to the standards the previous films in the series had set. the v/h/s films didn't set the high-water mark for anthology horror in my book - that would be 2015's southbound - but they were more good than bad, had more highlights than lowlights, & were dependably entertaining. this is not. most of this is pretty lazy, even by cut-rate horror standards.

BUT - the nacho vigalondo segment 'parallel monster' is pretty good, one of the better segments in any of the vhs films, and is absolutely worth seeing. i'd give that segment a 3.5 easily, maybe even a little higher. if you haven't seen it, & had avoided this because of its dire reviews, i'd say go seek it out. the film is streaming on shudder right now, & vigalondo's short starts at 26:09.

rabies (2010) 2/5 israeli slasher film that didn't make a ton of sense to me. that's not a fatal flaw in a horror film, & i'm willing to forgive a movie when i can't quite square up why characters are doing what they're doing if it's got a bit of drive & momentum & energy. but this really had none of those things.

animal house (1978) 4/5 how i made it this deep into adulthood without ever seeing animal house i can't explain. i don't think you could ask for much more from a raunchy comedy.

thoroughbreds (2018) 3/5 teenage girls lily & amanda decide to kill lily's really not so bad step-father. has a bit of a yorgos lanthimos feel, though it feels like a neutered, declawed version to me. the entire run-tme seemed to be on the edge of achieving dogtooth/lobster weird hilarity, but never quite getting there. & olivia cooke's amanda seems like a sketch, a rough draft more than a person. still worth a watch for people who value & seek out odd, quirky things.

let's scare jessica to death (1971) 3.5/5 recently released mental patient isn't sure whether she's being tormented or if she's slipping back into insanity. there's maybe not quite enough story here, even for a fairly brisk 90 minute running time, but it's a reasonably creepy & fairly unique horror film - heavy on atmosphere, fairly light on scares, but worth a watch for people who like such things.

black sheep (2006) 3/5 reasonably entertaining new zealand killer sheep horror/comedy. good helping of gore, lots of practical effects.

Just Scream 4 which is my second favorite of the franchise. Here were my thoughts on rewatch recently:

There are so many things wrong with this film and it makes its charm.
Ex:
If you’re under a protection program and a murder occurs next to your house, it’s okay to attend a high school movie club the day after so you can impress some kids.
If you witnessed your friend’s murder, it’s okay to attend a horror-movie-secret-party the day after.
If you’re a cop and your wife just got stab in front of you it’s okay to shoot a warning shot 5 feet away from the killer.
The new generation is ready to sacrifice anything to get some fans.
Courtney Cox, God bless her, has a scary Ghostface killer face, I don’t know why she ruined such a beautiful face.
My rating: 7-7.5/10

Kingsman 2 at your recommendation : it was awful,I watched it last night on hbo, after 30 seconds on the fight sequence I wanted to change the channel ,but I didn't 4.5/10

Les pacts the loups, excellent French thriller 7.5/10

The legend of Tarzan 6.5/10

the opening sequence made me worry too. But thankfully I enjoyed the story. So you dont want to go to Poppy land with me?

I bought le pacte des loups recently, I want to watch it soon but it looks long

reply

Over two hours and expect some nudity and sex too - the French are very fond with it😉

No,I don't like poppy,she seems childish..kind of

Whatsa happenin hot stuff?

Actually watched three movies this week.

Pressure Point-1962 -Sidney Poitier- About a lack prison psychologist who must treat a racist nazi sympathizer.
The movie is dated in many regards. A lot of different angles. Too many maybe.
Bobby Darin played the sympathizer so casting may not have been the best. Still worth a look. 7

Three Billboards- 2017. I thoroughly this film. Just enough action, drama and comedy. Didn't overdo it
on any level. -8

The Sea Inside. -2004- Javier Bardem- True story about a man who was a quadriplegic who was fighting
for his right to die with dignity. A 30 year battle. A very touching story that hit home on many levels.
One of those that will mean something different to you depending on when in your life you watch it. 8.5

Other than that I got nothing and didn't see any of yours SK.
Keep up the good work.

Oh I bought Three Billboards recently, I'll try to fit it in and if not, you'll see it pop up soon.

American Hero (MC SpecialWatch): I thought I probably wasn't going to like this, and you even gave me an out, that I only had to watch 30 minutes. But as it turned out, I did like it. The motherf*cking motherf*cker stuff got old, but then, it was realistic dialogue, so I can't fault it for that.

Loved the concept: an ordinary(ish) inner city guy, with a boatload of unresolved issues, for some reason has superhero powers, and what does he do with them, given these drawbacks? A drama, yes, but there were also some great comedic moments: the unexpected and downplayed breaking of the 4th wall, and
the pesky book that kept trying to get itself read, or at least looked at -- I wanted to know which book it was! --
and other lesser moments.

As I've said before, its low rating puzzled me, but reading your review, I think it was due to people who love superhero movies expecting it to be yet another one, and were disappointed it wasn't. 8/10

Beauty and the Beast, 2017. I have Stratego to thank for watching this, even though this isn't the Disney version she loves so bad. I liked that it went back to its French roots as a story, and the sets were wonderful; the CGI too. But it was very choppy, with the plot hard to follow, even though I and virtually everyone else on this planet already know the plot.

I also thought that, given the main character was remarked upon repeatedly on how unusually beautiful she was, a remarkably beautiful actor should have been cast for the part, but wasn't. She's a perfectly attractive, pretty woman, and acted her role adequately, but I was distracted by the ravings about her beauty, when that wasn't the case. 5.5/10

That was some great reviewing Cat. Up t'ill now, American Hero has three 8/10's. Just Mina left to do her report.

Im happy

reply

Thanks, Stony. Coming from you, the consummate reviewer, that's quite a compliment.

Happy as you well should be. Your pick was a roaring success! Now for Mina to weigh in to see if it's unanimous or not. I'm going to bet it was a hit for her too.

Me Mina?
