StoneKeeper's Vacation Game: Guess a Movie #13 [Winner: FredBurroughs]

Rules of the game:

So you guys like to play games? Here is an investigation game that can be time consuming but it's lots of fun. Basically, I have a movie in mind and you have to guess which one it is. For each movie you guys are going to guess, I will give a hint that CONNECTS your guess with the movie I have in mind.
Example of connections: Actor, length, genre, aspect ratio, language, country, year, director, writer in common, rating, number of votes, nominations. It can even be something like: both movies involve a girl being murdered.

- The winner can either start a new game or say "pass". In case of a pass, the OP gets to start another one.
-After 12 hints, the point goes to the OP and he gets to start another one.

Good Luck!

You win! One of Kurosawa's least-known movies, but one of my very favorites.

You're really becoming the champ of this game lol.

By hint 9 I was thinking the game was gonna go to me! I had tried to narrow it down for you guys as best I could, but everybody's guesses were so far from the movie, and I admit I fumbled on a couple of the hints (The Shining hint was pretty bad; I should have taken that opportunity to say the movie was from before 1990 or something). Then you finally made the jump not just to Japan but right to Kurosawa lol. So I thought you were gonna get it at that point. Fred's sudden win was a big surprise.

reply

I should have went with Asia way quicker. I know you quite well after all...

reply

I was really surprised how long it took anyone to think the movie might have been from Asia hahaha. Although I did have to post hints 5 through 9 in really rapid succession because the guesses were coming in so fast at that point, so I guess people didn't have a lot of opportunity to consider it.

I AGONIZED over your Gladiator guess! Lol it took me like half an hour to think of anything Gladiator and Stray Dog have in common that I hadn't already made into a hint.

reply

the director hint is always a good one. As for the hint for The Shining I think it was OKay too.
Your worst one IMO is for Titanic. 'Before 2000' is very vague for a movie from the 40's.

But you can do as you please, im not complicated.

reply

Hmm. Yeah, I can see how one would think that. The way I saw it though, I was eliminating 18 years' worth of films, partly on the assumption that lots of people would be drawn to more recent ones that they've gone to see in the theater in recent years. With the Titanic hint, I was trying to say that the movie is an older one. What I didn't expect was that everyone would interpret "before 2000" to mean "near 2000", lol. I was of course prepared to narrow the date down further after that though, once people started getting closer. But yeah, that whole thing could have been avoided if I'd drawn a date line with the Shining hint. Ah well, it all worked out in the end anyway.

reply

Yep, for some reason, when I see 'before 2000' I assume it's in the 90's.

Like you said, we got it before the 12th hint anyways!

Keep at it my man

reply

Thanks. I was in a buying frenzy back when Criterion was rolling out Kurosawa DVDs. One of those buried gems in the master's filmography.

reply

I had considered going with a Kurosawa movie that's probably even less-known: "No Regrets For Our Youth", from 1946. Another of my favorites, and definitely my favorite Hara Setsuko movie; she was wonderful in it. But I decided it was probably too obscure.

reply

So, would you like to host the next one or pass on it?

reply

I'll get started on the next one!

reply

Cool. :)
