How painful is a root canal?

I MAY need one. *gulp*. Can you still get one even if no tooth pain? Dentist says it's infected but I feel no symptoms.

reply

I've had a few and had no pain at all. My dentist just numbed it up and went to work. It was slightly tedious, but that's all.

I actually slept through mine a few years ago. No. It had nothing to do with gas. He just gave me the shot to numb me. It was early in the morning and I was tired. I hadn't slept much the night before. I actually dozed off!
The real pain was the blasted bill!!!!

I'll admit there are times when I'd like to snooze when the hygienist is cleaning my teeth, but I fight it. I'd rather not embarrass myself by snoring in the chair.

Oh Boy! I sure do hope I don't snore! My husband does, but he claims that I don't. The thing is, how could he hear above all the noise he makes?

I've had two - an upper and a lower, both front teeth. The first one was many years ago before the pain relief techniques we have today were developed. That one was no fun - painful, but tolerable. And I knew I needed it because I was in so much pain beforehand. The second one was only a couple of years ago and the most discomfort I had was keeping my mouth open. I knew I would need that one too, although I was not in much pain. Saved the tooth and I'm happy about that. As Padeen said, get a second opinion if you feel unsure about whether you need it. It's your teeth and your money.

reply

Yes, you can get an infection and not feel it. You will be well anesthetized at the site, and should feel no pain.
