What was the first thing you bought with your own money?

I'm not talking about a pack of gum or a soda. Something more significant than those. Mine was a small black & white TV (yes, I'm that old) that I had saved for with money I made babysitting. I was probably about 14 years old and I had that thing for years.

a brand new 1984 Cadillac Convertible

reply

Eldorado? Lucky you! I would LOVE to have a convertible. My dream car is a convertible of just about any make.

reply

Tell us about it, yawk, the engine displacement, carbs, hp. The accouterments. What was the sticker price? Do you still have it? Did the top go up & down without a problem?

Please.

reply

You are one of the few people I have met who knows that the word is spelled “accouterments” and not “accoutrements”! Bravo.

reply

Thanks, R_K! I love the English language.

reply

Is English not your native language? If not, may I ask what is? English is the only language in which I am fluent. I’ve spent a lifetime trying to master it. It has its charms; but I think that the Romance languages simply sound more musical, and that the Teutonic languages, in which there are no silent letters, are more logical. And you are welcome. I design custom audio systems, and I love showing people their possibilities for bringing more music into their lives.

reply

Yes, it is. I speak no other language.

there was no engine displacement, it was always there how else could I drive it? however it was a white Biarritz with red leather, loaded (no blue tooth) paid about 30k,

We're a good bunch. We get along splendidly. Just watching you guys there for a few posts. It's rare to see it like this. We are blessed. Almost like we're in a time warp. It's weird, but, very good.

reply

Come again?

reply

You and howie had a moment there where there was a misunderstanding, but, you got by it admirably and quickly. Usually on Boards that kind of misunderstanding is used to commence battling for quite a while.

It was frankly beautiful to behold.

reply

Oh that,yes..well it happens sometimes😊

reply

Yes, if it's not addressed in the moment it can lead to an argument, or, a silence between parties. What happened with you 2 was THE way to address it.

You two done good.

reply

croft and I have known each other for over a year now - we have an understanding of sorts.

reply

You know me, howie, right away I was a little worried, but, it was settled so quick I was at once relieved and happy for you two. You're both fine guys. Good hearted fellows.

reply

I'm trying to be

reply

That's what I was wondering, too. Book or game.

reply

An Atari 2600 in late summer 1978 with money I earned from my paper route.

reply

& that Ice Hockey game that played on it. I God's, hammer & tong with the kids hours on end.

That was a great little game.

I saved up $400 bucks from chores and odd babysitting jobs for about two years and bought the sickest stereo system BestBuy had. It had a record player in it and I thought I was THE SHIT. I'd crack that baby to 25 and you could hear THUMP THUMP THUMP downstairs. My grandmother only loved it when I played the Party Boy theme song from the show Jackass. She loved to dance to it with me. Good memories. :)

reply

I hope that's a typo - sickest?? I assume you meant slickest. 😉

reply

Its not a typo. Back in the 90s, sick was a slang word, meaning really cool or crazy. :)

reply

Oops, sorry. This old fogy had no idea! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

reply

No worries! :D

reply

If you want audio systems my friend, I am one of the very best there is to help you, whether for stereo or for home theater. Please never hesitate to ask me for guidance. Music nourishes our souls.

The first thing that I bought was a component stereo system comprising integrated amplifier, turntable and bookshelf speakers from Radio Shack, God help me. It was from their crap Realistic line; but, at 12, I was happy. I have moved on. People have literally NO IDEA how good a recording can sound.

The second thing that I bought was 24-gauge brass tubing, solder, a soldering gun, 24-scale magnesium wheels ands slick tires, ball-bearing axle housings, a monster Kemtron electric motor and a 427 Cobra extruded clear plastic body with which to build my first scratch-built slot car.

The next one that I made was better.

reply

:) I won't hesitate!

reply

I would be sad 😭 if you did!

reply

Beer and Cigarettes, 14

reply

Tsk, tsk! At 14?? You rebel, you!

reply

haha nice

reply

oh yeah , beer - about the same age
and Boone's Farm and Annie Green Springs

reply

Boone's Farm, a lot of folks drank that shit, couldn't stand it Beer, even boring bland mass marker American beer is 100% better than Boone's.

reply

You are preaching to the choir , my friend. -You live , you learn. I have been thru my Bali Hai, BF, AGS period.

Drink a coupla beers now and then and an occasional small glass of red wine in evening for my health ( good for digestion) , but not those el cheapo rot gut wines

reply

I think it was a Commodore VIC-20. It was a nice piece of kit back in the day. Not quite a WOPR like i'd hoped though.

reply

Bought a Tomos Moped in high school. Spent over a grand on it.

reply

Wow. Having a grand to spend in high school is pretty impressive. Good for you!

reply

It was fun as hell since my buddy had one as well. Although, in hindsight, it probably wasn't the best financial decision.

reply

Clothes, probably, after I HAD to give my Mother some of my money 🙄

reply

Once I had a job I had to buy my own clothes, too. I didn't mind really, because I was now in control of when and what I could buy.

reply

Yes, it was quite liberating.

reply

Same with me I'm sure - but I cannot recall the first time.- more than likely in my late teens , but I simply cannot recall
