What did you watch on this week that ended a month and started another? (01/28-02/03)

Oh yeah.
Here we go.

A pretty good week for me!

Cape Fear (1991 DVD) : All I remembered from this was the final scene on the boat so I had to rewatch it. It’s a great thrilling thriller let me tell you. I prefer De Niro in The Fan as I feel his character had a little bit more realism but he was still great in this. The scene where he kisses Juliette Lewis was fucked up. He’s 30 years older! Anyways: 7.5/10

Martian kid (2007 TV): ‘’ A science-fiction writer, recently widowed, considers whether to adopt a hyper-imaginative 6-year-old abandoned and socially rejected boy who says he's really from Mars.’’ I found this movie captivating. Mostly thanks to amazing performances by Cusak and the young boy. I liked how the story was treated and it also made a change to save us from the classic ‘’man falls in love with women at the end of the film’’. 7-7.5/10

In a valley of violence (2016 Netflix): ‘’ A mysterious stranger and a random act of violence drag a town of misfits and nitwits into the bloody crosshairs of revenge.’’ Hawke and Travolta were both in great form, as was the rest of the cast. I loved the relationship between the main character, his dog and his horse. There’s nothing like riding a horse as your dog follows. I did it both in real life and in Fable II, I just love it. The script was solid but some parts made me roll my eyes and I think the last act could have been a bit better. Otherwise I didn’t find it really violent but it was interesting enough and I appreciated the way that the relationship between the two enemies developed. 6.5-7/10

The Frontline (Go-Ji-Jeon 2011 DVD): ‘’ A drama centered on the Korean War's final battle that will determine the border between north and south.’’ I accidently started this movie thinking it was something I had not seen yet but I quickly realised I saw it no more than a year ago. I watched it again as it was a bit blurry in my mind. I think I enjoyed in more this time. The first time, the useless final battle had pissed me off. Now I saw it more as a powerful message. 7.5-8/10

The Good Place (2016 Netflix): I really enjoyed this show, watched the 13 episodes over the past 2 weeks. It’s very colorful, funny and original. I did not know Kristen Bell was such a talented and funny actress. Ted Danson was very lovable too. The rest of the cast was okay, no more no less. There are some details that bothered with the story but overall it was a lot of fun. Overall: 7.5-8/10

Somebody Up There Likes Me https://moviechat.org/tt0049778/Somebody-Up-There-Likes-Me , the turbulent history of the famed boxer, Rocky Graziano. This had to have been the inspiration for Stallone's Rocky; just too many similarities !

Paul Newman was good, of course, but occasionally came across as somewhat over the top. I was pleasantly surprised to see many familiar faces. For instance, a very young Steve McQueen and Robert Loggia made his film debut in this.

Some of the boxing sequences were very good. The film, after all, did win an Oscar for cinematography. Yup, a 7.5/10 !

Sounds good!

Have a good one

Reversal of Fortune (1990)... Should have been called The Dershowitz Monologues... Every other scene is a lecture. TV movie..

Blazing Saddles (1974)... Hillarious! It's so funny and Cleavon Little has a great singing voice...

A Scanner Darkly (2006)... Interesting adaptation of a Philip K Dick story... I have to be honest but the experimental animation does take quite a bit away from the performances.... cartoons still feel just like cartoons

Killing Gunther (2017)... Fun movie... Arnold is so good 😎

Ghost in The Shell (2017)... Nice visuals, but you get a sense they could have done more with the concept and story...

Bringing out The Dead (1999)... Solid film... Visually interesting... You get a real sense of a man who is barely holding it together, trying to find meaning in his chaotic life... Solid performance by Cage...

reply

A scanner Darkly: strange but good. 7/10
Killing gunther: has a rating of 4.7 but you make me curious still.
Bringing out the dead: Been too long, need to rewatch

reply

Killing Gunther is fun if you take it for what it is, a bit of silliness and Arnold enjoying himself and being on screen

reply

Cool, I wouldn't pay for it but if I have the chance to catch it I'll definitely watch it.

Good'Ol Arny is always fun to watch... well... almost always.

reply

Hey-oh!

I've seen Cape Fear and liked it.

The Good Place I gave up on after a couple of episodes, but I've been thinking of giving it another chance.

A terrible week for me. I saw some bits of Predator while working a night shift on the TV. That was pretty much it, as far as I can remember. So basically, I just dropped in to say "Hi" this week lol.

reply

Aight, aight.

Night shift huh? What domain you work in if I can ask?

reply

I work in a little shop. It was an accidental night shift if I have to be fair, and it was really boring lol.

reply

A little shop that's open at night.... hummm... I wonder what they sell there??

reply

All sorts of things, and booze!

reply

In wich country/city are you again?

Sorry, im curious, I know.

reply

It's cool :). I'm in Bulgaria.

reply

Cool, because my wife told me the other day:'' I bet it's just kids on your little moviechat site'' Then I said ''no, Im actually one of the young ones, I even got a contact with a woman in Hungary (speaking of you)'' Oops

reply

LOL! Since we don't have an irrational hatred for the Hungarians I'm going to let this one slide.

It's odd though, you'd think the Internet is almost entirely populated by teenages, and we're some of the younger people here.

reply

Oh, so you are in my group of age?

reply

I think so... I'm 30, you're around that age, right?

reply

Im older than you! HA! (by 2 yrs) But... HAHA!!

I found you had a pretty solid sense of humour for someone over 40. (Idk why I had this idea, probably because of the girl/woman comment)

Well, I dont know if you knew but now it makes sense that I declared you my fav member on the 'fav member' thread.

reply

Two whole years! WOW! Share your wisdom with me, oh ancient one. LOL

I was just messing with you with that comment. But I can see how you would assume I'm older, since almost everybody here is around or over 40. I think you must have mentioned how old you are somewhere for me to know that we're around the same age. Wasn't there a thread like that a while back?

I've missed that! You should know by now how much I like you SK, so the sentiment is very much shared!

reply

''I was just messing with you with that comment''
Don't worry with me, I know your sarcasm, and I enjoy it too. BUT, with my experience and knowledge I can tell you this: To reach the highest altitude, it's not just a question of aptitude but mostly of ATTITUDE.
I won't charge you for this one.

''I think you must have mentioned how old you are somewhere''
Did you already forgot that you saw me on youtube?!?! Glad to see I did quite an impression on you. Great, just great.

reply

I get a rhyme! Good thing you didn't charge me because it's priceless :)

I haven't forgotten I saw you on youtube! You are an adorable rapper. Which idk how much of a compliment that is for a rapper, but there you go lol. I think I knew around how old you were before that. I think... lol

reply

aaah, yeah. Im like an open book so I remember mentioning my age a few times.

Thanks for the compliment.

Maybe I'll come up with a moviechat rap someday... we never know.

reply

I enjoyed Cape Fear so much that I saw it more than once. I preferred DeNiro's performance in this over The Fan. It just seemed more chilling to me. I also thought Robert Mitchum's brief appearance was a cool touch.

I didn't care much for In a Valley of Violence although it had its good moments. It just felt pretentious to me, as if it was trying too hard to be a serious western.

You watch a lot of flicks, Stone. I watched The Cloverfield Paradox (aka The God Particle). I enjoyed it: 7.2.

I also watched The Good Place. I like this series, but I think it's losing a bit of steam.

😎

reply

You watched the entire first season?

reply

Good topic.

Jig(bloody)saw: Total & utter trash. Didn't care one jot about anyone and totally uninventive. None of the traps were good and no tension. Loved the originals. Perhaps, they need to go back to the original writer(s) and director(s).

Wonder Woman
Finally, got round to seeing this one and it was just okay. The 3rd act was terrible and lots little things bothered me throughout. My wife fell asleep during the 3rd act that's how interesting it was to her.

Confidential Assignment (Korean action movie)
Buddy cop movie but quite enjoyable. Similar to Red Heat from the old days with Arnie.

reply

Man, I can't wait to see Jigsaw, I hope I won't be disapointed. Saw is my favorite horror franchise ever.

I do enjoy them Korean flicks too.

reply

You will be disappointed. I loved original Saw movies but this one just takes the cake.

BTW: How can add a message without replying to anything? Does anybody know? Thanks.

reply

Not sure what you mean but you cant write without replying to me. Or someone else.

Otherwise you must start a new thread on the board.

Welcome to moviechat Rob.

The only one I saw on your listed was Cape Fear and that was so long ago I honestly cant remember it well enough to say what I thought of it.

I only saw a few movies during that time period:

Pound of Flesh (2015 Netflix) "A man's heroic attempt to help a woman in distress ends up with him waking up the next day without a kidney and plotting his revenge." JCVD film that is actually pretty solid. There are some clunky acting moments, the writing could have been better. But I did like the overall story arc for the film, there is a little more to it than just seeking revenge. The action is also very solid here, but the use of some CGI here and there hurts the movie and it does have some poorly done and oddly chosen green screen moments. 6/10.

Transformers: The Last Knight (2017 HBO) "Autobots and Decepticons are at war, with humans on the sidelines. Optimus Prime is gone. The key to saving our future lies buried in the secrets of the past, in the hidden history of Transformers on Earth." While for the most part I like Mark Wahlberg, the film itself is just bad. The story is silly and boring. I just didn't have much of a reaction to the overall film. The effects are generally well done, and I did like some of the elements taken from the old series making its way into the film even if some of it I think was not used in the right way. I went with 5/10 I didn't hate it but it wasn't very good either.

reply

Im a huge fan of JCVD from the 90's but I tend to stay away from his more recent movies. Maybe I should give this one a chance.

As for Transformers, it seems I am one of the very few who enjoyed the entire franchises up untill now. So I will definitely see this one.
