What did you watch on this week that ended a month and started another? (01/28-02/03)

Oh yeah.
Here we go.

A pretty good week for me!

Cape Fear (1991 DVD) : All I remembered from this was the final scene on the boat so I had to rewatch it. It’s a great thrilling thriller let me tell you. I prefer De Niro in The Fan as I feel his character had a little bit more realism but he was still great in this. The scene where he kisses Juliette Lewis was fucked up. He’s 30 years older! Anyways: 7.5/10

Martian kid (2007 TV): ‘’ A science-fiction writer, recently widowed, considers whether to adopt a hyper-imaginative 6-year-old abandoned and socially rejected boy who says he's really from Mars.’’ I found this movie captivating. Mostly thanks to amazing performances by Cusak and the young boy. I liked how the story was treated and it also made a change to save us from the classic ‘’man falls in love with women at the end of the film’’. 7-7.5/10

In a valley of violence (2016 Netflix): ‘’ A mysterious stranger and a random act of violence drag a town of misfits and nitwits into the bloody crosshairs of revenge.’’ Hawke and Travolta were both in great form, as was the rest of the cast. I loved the relationship between the main character, his dog and his horse. There’s nothing like riding a horse as your dog follows. I did it both in real life and in Fable II, I just love it. The script was solid but some parts made me roll my eyes and I think the last act could have been a bit better. Otherwise I didn’t find it really violent but it was interesting enough and I appreciated the way that the relationship between the two enemies developed. 6.5-7/10

The Frontline (Go-Ji-Jeon 2011 DVD): ‘’ A drama centered on the Korean War's final battle that will determine the border between north and south.’’ I accidently started this movie thinking it was something I had not seen yet but I quickly realised I saw it no more than a year ago. I watched it again as it was a bit blurry in my mind. I think I enjoyed in more this time. The first time, the useless final battle had pissed me off. Now I saw it more as a powerful message. 7.5-8/10

The Good Place (2016 Netflix): I really enjoyed this show, watched the 13 episodes over the past 2 weeks. It’s very colorful, funny and original. I did not know Kristen Bell was such a talented and funny actress. Ted Danson was very lovable too. The rest of the cast was okay, no more no less. There are some details that bothered with the story but overall it was a lot of fun. Overall: 7.5-8/10

Hi,SK.Not many,i'm afraid

Kogens nei 2016 - interesting movie from norway 7/10
The great raid 2005 7/10

reply

did you finish all five seasons of the Twilight Zone ??

reply

No,i had some very busy weeks, but i will catch up with season 5 soon.

reply

I did not know about The great raid. It looks pretty good.

reply

Well Hello😉
Are you a bit early this week amigo?

LOVE the Cape Fear remake...i think De Niro topped Mitchum in the role (i do not say that lightly) and liked Valley a lot

Snowy, dreary and freezing here in New York so i saw a bunch:

Cold in July- a very good thriller, nice cast, good twists and some proper violence...a winner

Breakdown Lane- ZOMBIES+DTV...skip it

Murder Weapons- Linnea Quigley and some other hot girl get released from the asylum and jerkface dudes start dropping like flies!
The practical gore effects in this are wonderful and i loved it...but everyone else will hate it so skip i suppose...

Pajama Nightmare- high fives to low budget, regional DTV film making but this was bad
Skip

Blackway- Liotta, Hopkins, Holbrook, Stiles, Bjorn from Vikings doing a very sensitive portrayel of a special needs person...this crime thriller had most of the parts and worked pretty damn well for me! Check it out

Saints and Soldiers- pretty good old school wwII throwback...produced by the Mormon Curch oddly enough!
I had no idea they made movies, they really are not on my radar
Good flick though

Death Sentence- Kevin Bacon+Deathwish+Taxi Driver=good stuff and the camera man was REALLY on point...really liked it ( lol'd a few times 'cuz c'mon...Kevin Bacon is a bad mofo!?!) Good times!

Vacation- 4 ladies in a beach house, an unfortunate accident and all the feels...a bit Arthouse but i enjoyed it
Nobody else will
Again, props to small indies

John Wick 2-WHOOOHOOO Mothertruckers!!!!
This was badass stuff
Hell yeah
If you didnt like it we can punch each other with our Glocks until we're both dead
Goddam love these John Wick movies
Part 3 May 2019🔫🔫🔫

Thx as always for the thread of the week Stoneybro👍

reply

Always a pleasure Shogun!

I added Cold in July, Death Sentence and Blackway to my list. I had never heard of them. I think I own Saints and Soldiers but not seen it yet.

I bought John Wick 2 this week-end, now you got me all PUMPED UP!! Ohhh YEAAAHHH. I will watch it this week I think. Loved the first one.

reply

Saints was a fun war flick, kind of a throwback to the older movies where every GI is a 'type' and every German needs doing away with
After the third mention of The Bible i was like 'hey what gives...'
Anyway, it wasnt too over the top in terms of religion so it was cool

reply

The Possession https://moviechat.org/tt0431021/The-Possession, a third rewatch, I think. I really like this underrated thriller. Sure, it's flawed, but it also has so many good elements. The pacing for one. Plus, the performance of Jeffrey Dean Morgan as the loving, patient, tolerant dad suddenly finding himself besieged by circumstances increasingly beyond his control. And then, the spellbinding performance by Natasha Calis as the possessed daughter. It deserves at least a 6.5/10 rating, imo.

reply

I have heard good things about it and i like Morgan
I will seek it out!

reply

Not my type of movie, doubt I'd enjoy it.

Murder on the Orient Express (2017) - This should not have been made. The movie added nothing to the 1974 version. Poirot looked ridiculous and was way too thin and physical for the Poirot I have come to know. The did look wonderful and had a great cast. 6/10

Stand by Me (1986) - Everyone loves this movie. I know coming of age movies are great. I found it a bit blah. 7/10

The Abominable Mr Phibes (1971) - A fun low budget horror/comedy with Vincent Price as a man who takes revenge on the nine doctors he considers responsible for his wife's death. Good to see Joseph Cotten. 7/10

Hardcore (1979) - George C Scott plays a father who goes looking for his missing teenage daughter who is making porno
movies in Los Angeles. Funny in places especially where Scott's character attempts to become a porn producer. The script is a bit weak. 7/10

Hollow in the Land (2017) - A Canadian production. A young woman sets out to find her younger brother who suspected of murder. Very formulaic - the plot is a bit hard to follow 6/10

Good Will Hunting (1997) - Finally saw it after all these years. Great performances from Damon and Williams. Even Ben Affleck is good. A feel good movie with some good humor. 8/10

Retribution (2016) - A four episode drama/murder mystery based in Scotland. A young couple is killed and the killer shows up at the house of one of the parents and is also killed. They blew it with the ending. Maybe should have been a bit longer. 6/10.

I dont know a soul that doesnt love Stand By Me
I saw it in the theater
Its pretty much the perfect movie about how little boys think and act
And ive always found the ending to be so sad...
Feel like watching it again

reply

Stand by me: Saw it for the first time a few years ago and enjoyed it although I don't 'love it' as others do too. 7/10

The abominable Mr Phibes: Idk if you remember but I saw it a few months ago. It was so fun to see the different deaths. 7.5/10

Good will hunting: A bit like Stand by me, I enjoyed it but not as much as most people did. 7/10

reply

I agree mostly on In a Valley of Violence, except I would rate a full point lower 5.5-6/10. The tone was inconsistent, moving from serious drama to what may have been unintentional comedy.

It's funny you mention riding a horse with the dog following. While watching, I was thinking "how is that little guy supposed to keep up"? They really got a smart and beautiful dog for this and he did a bunch of cute tricks.

reply

I see what you mean.

Yep, loved that dog.

Boogie Nights: same 7/10
Okja: liked it 7/10
Shaun: Very, very good. 8.5/10
Kiss kiss: Liked it a lot. 7.5/10
Taxi Driver: Right!? 7.5-8/10

Tried something new this week.

Life-2017- Absolutely nothing original. 4/10

All Nighter-2017-Emile Hirsch, J.K. Simmons -A comedy where Simmons goes looking for his daughter with her exboyfriend. Some laughs 6/10

Don't Breathe-2016 Suspense move where 3 teenagers break into a blind war veterans house to steal some money.
Liked more than I thought I would but it's not a classic. 6.5/10

In This Our Life-1942-Bette Davis, Olivia de Havilland Davis steals her sisters husband and gets herself into some trouble.
Always fun to see these two together 7/10

The Lady in the Van-2015-Maggie Smith, Alex Jennings, True story of playwright Alan Bennett and his relation ship with a women who lived in a van in his driveway for 15 years. A really good and funny story. 7/10

The Family-2016 A documentary about a cult in Australia. Stolen babies, LSD, brainwashing, jesus, abuse, prominent people in the community.
I found the whole story fascinating. It lasted so long and had so many important people involved.
She had created her own little world that she completely controlled in different countries.
The only thing I didn't like is there is so much information and it goes so deep we only get to see the surface.
They interview former sect members and former sect kids. I just wanted to see more of it. 7.5/10

SK the only one of yours I've seen is Cape Fear.
Not a bad movie but I much prefer the original.

reply

The lady in the Van: killed it out of boredom. Maybe I was just not attentive enough.

The family: This sound very interesting but its barely know by anyone. I guess it'S not on Netflix...

reply

It was a slow moving movie but it was based on a true story.
Imagine a women living in a van in your driveway for 15 years.
She became quite a legend in that neighborhood.

I would guess the it might not be on Netflix.
It's not a "you have to see it " documentary but the whole story blows my mind.
The lady is still alive and still has followers.

reply

Don't Breathe - I gave a 7/10 - I thought it was reasonably suspenseful.
Life - I thought this was better than Alien Covenant. I am a sucker for sci-fi survival stories. Gave it a 6.5/10

reply

If I'm comparing a movie to Alien Covenant I think that says it all.
It's all the same story with different characters. IMO.

The only thing I didn't like about Don't Breathe was it just kept going and going.
I thought it was too much. Plus they set it up for a sequel.

reply

Was Don't Breathe that one with the turkey baster? Yikes!

Life was just crap.

The Family sounds interesting.

reply

Yes, the turkey baster and yikes is correct.
Wasn't expecting that.

The Family would make a great one season series. Like Fargo.
12 episodes or at least a mini series.
Her and her husband never spent anytime in prison. Just a fine.
Some of the kids today still don't know who their real parents are.

reply

That's just awful. Sadly I couldn't find it. I found a '74 BBC documentary called The Family, and though it was about them, turns out it's just about a British family lol. It's still interesting though.

reply

Great, now I have to watch another documentary called The Family.

At least it's a British family. I do hope their up to no good.
It makes it that much more interesting.

Just a couple this week:

The Devil Wears Prada (2006) - In a way, I think this movie is kind of sad. Just how desperate are people that they will work in this kind of job atmosphere? I will never understand it. Meryl Streep plays 'snooty, demanding witch-with-a-capital-B' very well, though. If nothing else, I can now say I've seen this movie. Not an awful movie, just not a very good one, either. 6/10.

Hinterland (2014 - series 1, UK) Richard Harrington plays DCI Tom Mathias, a quiet, rather morose detective who has left his London position to relocate to west Wales - an ongoing storyline is that he's attempting to deal with something personal that happened back there. In his quiet way, he goes about solving murders with help from his assistant, DI Mared Rhys, played by Mali Harries. There's no flashy technology here, just gripping plot lines set against the backdrop of a beautiful, but bleak, Wales. Mostly English with a bit of Welsh (subtitled) mixed in gives it some authenticity. If you like Scandi-noir, you'll probably enjoy this. 7.5/10.

reply

Hinterland is great - I binged all 3 seasons last year.

reply

Have you seen Shetland? Or Wallander? (the UK version with Kenneth Branagh)

reply

Yes both are good somewhat similar to Hinterland - I have a thing for British crime drama. Thank God for Netflix.

reply

So do I, in case you can't tell. 😉 Thank God for my amazing library.

reply

Not seen these.
