Best remake ever?

There have been lots of terrible remakes (Ghostbusters anyone?),but some are outstanding. What is you favorite remake ever?

I'm leaning towards Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, but The Departed is amazing, and might be first on my list.

reply

Some said blade runner, but i doubt it.

reply

Asking about remakes, not sequels. I agree it wasn't the greatest sequel though.

I loved Mitchum but damn, De Niro really killed it

reply

It's not a favorite of mine, but Scarface seemed to completely overshadow and damn near erase the original.

reply

Yes!
Good choice

Gore Verbinski's The Ring.

reply

Ben Hur 1959

reply

Didn't they made a "remastered"version?

reply

Carpenter's The Thing (1982) is a classic

Evil Dead (2013) was really great too

reply

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde 1931

reply

Spielberg's "War of the Worlds" had its moments.

reply

I like Cruise quite a bit on screen and he was good here

I hang my head

reply

I never knew The Departed was a remake.

reply

I just learned that Scarface was.

reply

Yup. Based on the Hong-Kong film Infernal affairs.

reply

Now I have to see the original.

reply

IMHO original HK movie Infernal Affairs is way more interesting and better than hollywoodised The Departed.

reply

The Thing (1982)
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)

reply

The '78 "Snatchers" is the best remake ever (it's better than the original --which was damn good).

reply

I'm trying, but I can't think of a re-make I've seen.

reply

The Maltese Falcon (1941)

reply

Yes, the best remakes are of movies where 99% of the population aren't even aware that a predecessor existed. There was also a Wizard of Oz before the 1939 version. But in good remakes, they are so successful they obliterate even the memory of the original.
