Have they implemented some other social media widget in its place or is the website just another database?
I've been trying my utmost never to use their website since they closed the boards on Feb 20th but out of morbid curiosity would like to know how they're doing. I thought I'd eventually forget about the place but its been 8 months and it still feels fresh in my mind.
They have a little video production going on there... inoffensive, clean looking youth talking about movies*... I think they want to allow their corporate clients to be able to shape public opinion on films...
It's looking more corporate and sanitised... It will continue to be successful, but it is not for film enthusiasts, it's made for marketing...
I only use it to check out technical specifications for movies, or when TheMovieDB doesn't have full info on director, cast and crew (which is getting rarer)...
* For example they recently had a clip showcasing actors turned director and did not mention Mel Gibson! Even though they mentioned several others...
That site is quite handy for filming locations, tech specs and run times...i use it pretty often when i need to look something up
The blonde chick with the large frames in those stupid videos is quite a cutey btw
Both, from what I understood at the moment. I rarely touched the site since the boards closed down in February. Trying to plug in more social media and whatever 'live shows' they want to sponsor or monetize.
They threw away over 15 years of posts, some from members who worked in film and television. Now they're doing what IGN, Buzzfeed and all the other news media website clones are already doing. The more I think about it the more prestigious it was, it was the go to place for anyone who had ever watched a movie. There's no longer a website to collectively gather people with such a vast variety of interest in film. Unbiased discussion from real people and not completely full with the usual studio plants omnipresent on social media.
I guess Hollywood really did have the final say in this.
I liked going to IMDb after I watched a movie and discuss it with others. Or discuss actors or actresses. Before the boards closed I went there almost daily. Since they closed I have gone there 2 or 3 times to check the other movies an actress was in. Do not even have to log in to do that.
I really miss being able to watch a show while disscussing, debating, or having heated arguments on the boards in real-time. It really made watching series way more fun and enjoyable for me. There is no message board that will ever be like the old IMDb.
I always saw the trolls as part of the entertainment on the old boards. Here I dont really know anyone or anything that’s going. Tbh it’s kind of boring here if you’re not in the “cool” crowd.
Most of the trolls that I encountered were no real threat they mainly stopped by to stir the pot “so to speak “. However there were a few that seemed to have some sort of personal agenda towards everyone, of what I don’t know. For the most part they had no real interest in the film being discussed, but sometimes their input did manage to make the discussions more lively.
Regardless of the changes made by IMDB, as a fan of film, I miss the message boards tremendously. What an unmatched source for information, backstories, race baiting and debate. Countless times when I would learn everything about a film that went over my head. Sadly missed by me.
