Anybody remember Phil Donahue's afternoon talk show?

"Is the caller there?" "Caller." Hugh Hefner's passing got me thinking about that old talk show from the 1970's as he or his business were discussed many times directly or indirectly. Hefner was the face of porn back then until Larry Flynt opened his mouth in the 1980's.

Now that I think about it PD was run a couple of times in the late morning. The whole idea was run it when kids were at school. By the time the kids got home in the afternoon then Gilligan, the Brady's, etc. were on.

I once read an article about daytime tv programming in the 60's and 70's. It was aimed at housewives because they were the only ones home during the day on weekdays.
Morning was game shows because they were doing housework and cleaning , so they could sort of follow a game show with lots of bells and noises and simple games while they were busy doing other stuff. Game hows didn't require much focus to watch them, it was all kind of frenetic and loud.

Then afternoons were soap operas on all the main networks, because supposedly by then they had finished their work and could sit down to really follow a more complicated plot.
Then late afternoon was talk shows which they could watch while cooking dinner.

Intersting...
I think youre correct
My own Mom was a housewife and my Pops was never not working...
She seemed to follow that kind of daily routine late 70's/early 80's...
Hmmm...thx!

I remember him and his show, but not that it ever ran in the morning. That might have been a regional thing in some parts of the States. As far as I knew, it was always a late afternoon show.

Sometimes he had interesting guests. A lot of the time, not so much.

We picked up two different television markets back during the 1970's. I mostly remember it at 3PM and a few times when I missed school on at 11AM. I think the market that had it at 11AM did not keep it long. I mostly remember it in the afternoon. I want to say his shows were recorded for the morning time slot. I can't remember but I thought somebody where I lived called in and got to speak while the afternoon show was on one day.

As a young housewife and new mother, I watched that religiously! LOL!

I was given free tickets to see him when he was in London so we went along. He was talking about the Media and the Royal Family.

I remember him being fired from MSNBC because he was right about the Iraq War... Cenk Uygur from TYT, as well...

I remember my mom watching that around the time she'd start making dinner. Maybe a 3pm show, if I remember correctly? She would talk at the TV in disgust, much like I do now if I watch The View 🤢
