What did you watch last week? (05/14-05/20)

Welcome back everyone!
I would like to thank you all for making this thread a success with more than 130 posts last time. And some great conversations on top of that. Cheers!

My week:

https://moviechat.org/tt1019452/A-Serious-ManA serious man (2009 DVD): After all our talk from last week I was anxious to see it and unfortunately, I did not enjoy it as I wished. I can dig a movie that consist mainly of conversations ( Waking life, Sling Blade, Glengarry Glenross, American beauty, The hateful 8...) but in this one, I quickly had enough of seeing these people sit down and casually and boringly discuss life matters. I didn't hear any deep stuff, I didn't feel the emotions and I obviously couldn't connect with the characters. On the movie's Imdb page, the reviewer mentions "not being a Jew and feeling excluded or even a voyeur." I wouldn't say that much but I do see where he's coming from. I can also enjoy movies that leave a part to the viewer but this one was just too much. The movie was not all bad though, I liked the dreams parts, the settings and the ambiance were great, the acting was good and the kid was amazing at playing the pothead at the Bar mitzvah. I heard in an interview that the story was originally going to be half about the kid, half about the father and they changed it along the way. Big mistake if you ask me. 5.5/10

https://moviechat.org/tt0165361/Highway
Highway (2002 DVD): I knew I loved this movie although I couldn't remember when was the last time I saw it. So the movie itself was blurry in my mind and a rewatch was proper. It was great this time around too. Set in the year 94', Jared Leto and Jake Gyllenhaal (what more do you want?) in a perfect mix between Fear and loathing in LA, Kids, Y Tu mama Tambien and My own private Idaho. Yep, all those movies blended into one succulent refreshment that slickly tackles great topics such as youth, friendship, love, sex, drugs, Kurt Cobain's death, violence, alligator boys and road trips. James Cox did not directed a lot of movies but I sure loved the two I saw. (this and Wonderland) 7.5/10

https://moviechat.org/tt0059113/Doctor-Zhivago
Dr. Zhivago (1965 DVD): Lawrence of Arabia is in my top 20 so I had to see this, and I was not disappointed. It was a grand voyage, an epic journey of an amazing story about Russian revolution, war and, mainly, love. With some powerhouse acting, a wonderful cinematography and a good soundtrack, it did took me two evenings to watch it all but there was never a dull moment. I feel like David Lean is a bit similar to Spielberg in the sense that they succeed to attain epic proportions in their films without overdoing it. (Next one on the list is the bridge on the river Kwai.) 9/10

https://moviechat.org/tt0110955/The-Ref
The Ref (1994 DVD): "A cat burglar is forced to take a bickering, dysfunctional family hostage on Christmas Eve." Starring Kevin Spacey, Jude Davis and Dennis Leary, this movie is just was what you can expect from it; A mildly amusing afternoon comedy flick. The story involves a lot of fighting, crying, yelling and drama and they use that vehicle to be humorous. . I didn't find any part hilarious but overall it made me smile. My wife really liked it. 6/10

https://moviechat.org/tt4257926/Miracles-from-Heaven
Miracles from heaven(2016 DVD): "A young girl suffering from a rare digestive disorder finds herself miraculously cured after surviving a terrible accident."
Powerful, touching, stunning, beautiful, heart wrenching, well-acted... I freaking hated the movie because it made me wet my face so much. Seriously, it's a good "true story movie" and you see the real people at the end of the film so that always adds to the credibility. 8/10

Documentary:

Placebo: Soulmates never die (2003 24mins): Friday night I was feeling pretty groovy so I decided to pop in one of my favorite music DVD. Only to realize that I never had watched the documentary that was on it. It was just awesome, the happiness on my face gradually increased until one point where I had a big whole smile that didn't want to leave. They truly are one of the greatest band ever. My second favorite after a band you might know by the name of The doors. if you never heard of Placebo, I strongly suggest you check them out. you will either fall in love or dislike it.
10/10

I watched season 2 of Master of None. I liked it much better than season 1. I would say season 1 was 6/10 and season 2 is 8/10

I started watching the old Starz TV series Camelot. I'm only 3 episodes in, but it's okay so far. It's not blowing me away, but Eva Green steals any scene she's in and I will stick with it.

I saw Alien:Covenant in the theater last night. 6.5/10

Some low budget horror

Contracted Phase 2 (2015) - as good as the first one 7/10

Satanic (2016) - not scary at all 5/10

The Lazarus Effect (2015) - this had potential but went all bad halfway through 6/10

reply

Haven't seen those but I'd like to suggest The Lazarus project (2008) with Paul Walker. It's surprisingly good.

The Only Son (1936, Japan)
Ozu Yasujiro's first talkie. A poor woman in rural Japan works hard in a factory to provide her son with an education and send him to Tokyo to have a good life. Years later, she visits him in Tokyo to see how he's doing. Though he's barely scraping by, with a mediocre job and barely enough money to put food on the table, he strains his wallet to the limit in order to impress her and make it appear he's doing well. Gradually, though, she becomes aware of the truth of his situation, and attempts to persuade him to change the course of his life.

Police Story 2 (1988, Hong Kong)
Jackie Chan's character Chan Ka Kui is demoted to traffic cop for his reckless heroics in the previous Police Story movie. He becomes disillusioned with his police career and attempts to retire to spend more time with his girlfriend, but his old enemies aren't going to let him rest when they return to get revenge, and when a new blackmail gang bombs a mall, he's pressured to return to duty. One of the more serious Jackie Chan movies, and a pretty great one with memorable villains.

Shall We Dance? (1996, Japan)
I've seen this movie before, but felt like watching it again last week. A middle-aged accountant, Sugiyama, who has seemingly attained everything he needs, a wife and daughter and a comfortable middle-class home, finds that he's lost his zest for life as he's settled into his daily routine and seemingly has nothing new before him. Then one night on the train he sees a woman who intrigues him in the window of a school for dancing lessons, and decides to take the class in order to meet her. Sugiyama and the other men in the class are initially awkward and embarrassed, but gradually find a new meaning in their lives. As does their teacher, the woman in the window, who has suffered disappointments of her own but is inspired by Sugiyama's transformation. This is one of my favorite movies ever, a really nice, heartfelt and funny film.

I really like The Ref. I first saw that when I was a kid, must have been 9 years old, 10 at the most (which would be around 1999-2000), came across it on TV one day and found it gut-bustingly hilarious. It was probably the first "grown-up" comedy I ever saw. My parents would never have let me watch it, which I suppose was part of the fun. I saw it again a year or two ago. I didn't find it as funny as I did when I was a kid, but I still enjoyed it, got some good laughs out of me. Bought the DVD. I like it as much for nostalgia as anything else.

Although not as great as the first one, police story 2 was a fun movie indeed .

Shall we dance looks interesting, thanks.

I strongly recommend it, it's a wonderful movie. I rated it 10/10 on IMDb. There was an American remake of it with Richard Gere and Jennifer Lopez, which I haven't seen yet but I very much doubt it's as good as the original Japanese, because it doesn't have the same cultural context that's such a big factor in the Japanese one.

Not last week, but last night. Figured I'd best post about it now before I forgot about it.

Indiscretion: https://moviechat.org/tt3147336/Indiscretion

A married woman's affair comes back to haunt her when her obsessed lover infiltrates every part of her life.

Found it on Netflix, while vainly searching for something good to watch. I see it's only rated a 5 on IMDb, and with good reason. It's awful! I like Mira Sorvino, but god, she was awful in this. So was everyone else, and the plot was as predictable as it could possibly be.

OP, of your list, I've only seen Dr Zhivago. The cinematography is indeed spectacular. Good acting, and the background history of Russia made it compelling.

The Ref sounds like it might be fun.
