Is this site growing?

I don't mean in terms of members, I mean in terms of activity.

It doesn't seem to be. I was hoping by now that we wouldn't still have titles lingering on the Trending board where the last response was more than an hour old, but in fact not only are they still there but there are several.

I wonder if we're destined to be a small community forever. Not that that doesn't have some advantages.

reply

It's getting less active everyday

reply

It's hard to tell because I think some trolls with heavy post counts seem to have gotten bored... so while the overall numbers have flattened or gone down... I think it's gained with a few quality posters in their place. The key is to find even just a dozen more knowledgeable members who like to write a lot... that should bring enough to get it going in the right direction.

I'm personally posting more than I ever would... I'm sure some are annoyed to see some of the names popping up over and over... but I'm just trying to give the site a push start. Once it gets going... I'll go back to business as usual.

reply

I wonder how many active posters are here at this time. I also wonder if any of the other IMDB replacement sites that sprang up are faring any better.

reply

I've seen a few simple message boards that have more traffic... but the reason I've supported this site is because they have all the individual boards and I want to keep that going. If all you want to do is talk about movies then you can find other places. It's going to be a long hard road, and I'm not sure if it will catch on... but if enough people keep making the effort, then others will continue to come. It's like if a hundred people moved to a small town but they are disappointed it's not a city... so they immediately move away. It takes a long time to build a city... or even a medium sized town... and if they want to rebuild what was there before... it will take time and some hard work.

reply

Indeed. I agree with that and that's a big reason why I've stuck around.

Like you say, we have all the boards for individual movies, which I love. It comes the closest to recreating the IMDB experience.

I have another forum that also discuss movies on, but the format here is unique.

reply

I think it's pretty active considering that the site is only three months old. But it could be more active if the notification system gets fixed to let you get notified whenever someone replies to a thread you're participating in.

reply

Yeah, I've missed a lot of posts directed at me because the bell icon didn't register.

reply

I was here pretty close to the beginning. Yes, it's only three months old, but at the same time in those three months not much seems to have changed.

reply

I can't agree with you there. I've been here 3 or so months and back then, this General Discussion board was far and away the most active. When I saw posters on the individual film/show boards, they were invariably names I recognized from posting here.

Starting about 2 months ago, I saw a decided increase in people posting on the film/shows boards, who I'd never seen post here. So it became obvious new people were coming to the site and immediately searching whichever boards most interested them and posting there.

I wasn't on IMDb when it was only 3 months old, but can't imagine it was any less active than MC is.

reply

Your comment does seem kind of accurate to my recollection, but it seems that if a lot more people were really going out and posting on the individual movie/TV boards then we'd see a decrease in the times on the Trending feature. Considering that Trending only shows the last 15 films to get activity on their boards, I'm always surprised that there are films on there that haven't been touched in an hour or even two hours.

reply

I have been seeing a decrease in times on the Trending area over the past two months. Sometimes it's busier than others, depending on the day or time of day.

reply

Assuming we keep posting at a similar rate over the next 6 days... the general section is about as active it was 6 weeks ago. However, this is without MovieMan spamming at double or triple the rate of everyone else. He probably accounted for up to 20% of the posts... so if you consider we've held steady with his absence... then we still are showing growth. Trending also is a difficult thing to measure... someone will go post on ten boards in a row and then it looks busy... trolls would often do this... so I wouldn't get too discouraged though it definitely is something to watch.

reply

There seem to be fewer active trolls. So less activity due to the trolls getting bored is a good thing that might lead to more real people posting.

reply

It can be a lonely experience if you're after the fan interaction that once was so plentiful on IMDb with such lively boards as Arrested Development or Breaking Bad. Here there is little activity thus far on individual boards, and I confess I have scarcely bothered to write anything of substance because there is an intuitive awareness of how small the community is. Most posting activity is going on in General Discussion and I myself am guilty of this as well.

reply

Personally, I am almost never post in General Discussion or any of the general boards and almost exclusively use the individual boards.

I always think there's a good chance someone will see the film in the Trending section and then respond, and a good amount of time it works out. I actually would encourage everyone to start venturing out if all you're doing is staying huddled up in here.

reply

I really do think it's becoming more active across the boards, but it will take time.
There are demonstrably more people here than a few months ago,the trending section is working. The individual boards are also more active.
Some may never be and that was also true of IMDb to be fair it just depends.
I think its heading in the right direction though.

reply

I wonder how much better the IMDB experience would've been if there had been a Trending feature. I think that would made a huge difference, considering how many people actually visit the site.

reply

Same here!

reply

I've noticed that IMDb2 is starting to slow down (outside of the politics board). Maybe people are switching sites?

reply

If the two sites combined it would make a good community. I have nothing against imdb2... but its format is a generic free message board template.

reply

I like how your thread title looks optimistic; however, with anything negative, I fail to see how this site would actually become better. If anyone catches site of anything negative, such as when you had written "I wonder if we're destined to be a small community forever", I am hoping the lurkers do not end up leaving because they see a limit. We need to keep being proactive. Anytime you see a movie, look up that movie and post the web address of it as a URL. Make a thread and title it with the movie title and indicate that it is being discussed on its message board.

reply

Millions of users..

reply

I'm making a thread to discuss the goings on here at MovieChat. As I mentioned, I've been here since nearly the beginning and have been paying close attention to things, and I'm just asking if anyone else has noticed that the site doesn't seem to be growing. Do you feel like this is not a valid topic to discuss?

In regard to this:

"Anytime you see a movie, look up that movie and post the web address of it as a URL. Make a thread and title it with the movie title and indicate that it is being discussed on its message board."

Make a thread where? Isn't the Trending feature supposed to let everyone know what films are being discussed?

reply

It's not valid to discuss if it is put in a negative light.

The trending feature is doing its job; however, you have all ready stated how it has not been seen to have an effect. If this is the case, we have to be proactive. Make threads on the one area of the site that seems to get the most traffic, the general discussion.

reply

It's not valid to discuss if it is put in a negative light.

LOL.

Not sure what the official stats are but it's definitely improved over time. I quit themoviedb because there was almost no activity. The trolls that were here in the beginning have either given up or been ignored so that's another improvement over IMDB.

reply

Me too, themoviedb never really did it for me, and I've even stopped going to imdb2 -- I come here all the time now. I'm here about as much as I used to be on the IMDb boards -- several times a day, every day. I really like it here!

reply

I was wondering how themoviedb was going to work out regarding their discussion boards. Sounds like it didn't actually take off.

reply

Yes, I got that feeling that place wasn't taking off, and I guess I got a different feeling here; this place somehow just always seemed like it has much more promise.

reply

Well the interface here is so user-friendly and it's such a close recreation of the IMDB experience that I'm surprised anyone gravitated toward the alternatives.

reply

TMDb discussion boards did take off, but it's 90% troll activity nowadays. You can always count on trolls to be hyperproductive, but it's the wrong kind of activity. I don't know why mods there tolerate this shit, but when I visit TMDb I'm always glad trolls chose that site instead of this site.

reply

I just looked over there and wow, you're right. No idea why the mods are putting up with it, but that's why the trolls have chosen tMDb to settle in on.

reply

Such as the following:

https://www.themoviedb.org/talk/59205c85c3a3687a8e044e1f

reply

Yeah, I saw that this morning [eyeroll]

reply

That is what I'm talking about. Waste of time and predictable. Its not funny or engaging.

It seems to be busy every time I log in.

reply

Is it busy aside from the plethora of stupid troll posts? If so, I must be looking in the wrong area, because that's all I'm seeing, with the occasional real post and responses, but usually even the real OPs are overtaken by trolls.

Really, if in fact there's more than one or two, they should start a MovieTrollsRUs.com site and get whatever jollies they get out of one another.

reply

Actually tmdb has been overrun

reply

Referencing the above link on tMDB, I must concur, the trolls and the no-nothings have found a home there. To sum it up in response to my reply he wrote the following:

"One should always celebrate their first STD."

Need I say more?

reply

That's Ben, with yet another of his socks. If you respond at all, and especially as if you're offended, you're giving him exactly what he wants. That's his oxygen.

reply

Thanks again, Cat for the info. I have a lot to learn about that jerk...and to definitely avoid engaging "it"!
