What's your favorite movie genre
And maybe some favorites From that genre.
shareNo real genre in particular, as long as they're good, entertaining, well-made films. Don't really care much for most musicals.
shareMy absolute favorite isn't really a genre, and there are very few of them. I like films that have the combination of being uplifting and/or inspiring, and intelligent. Usually referred to, disparagingly, as "feel good" movies, if that's an actual genre.
I can only think of a few at the moment: It's A Wonderful Life, Driving Miss Daisy, and The Enchanted April.
Since there are so few of them, I have to make do with my next favorite, which is films that are complex, psychological, and not overly depressing, or sheerly entertaining (ala Raiders of the Lost Ark).
In theory, comedies would be a favorite, but I don't find most of them actually funny, except in spots here and there.
I also like period pieces. Gosford Park is a good example, because of its complexity and attention to detail.
It's a Wonderful Life is a movie I had to start liking as my Dad always inquired about it nearing Christmas. When I first saw it, like I do with most intellectual movies; I doze off.
Another good movie you may like would probably be "A Beautiful Mind". Like "It's a Wonderful Life", I could not get into it much. Then again, I at least was able to sit through parts of "It's a Wonderful Life" and make it through the tear dropping parts like "No Man is a Failure Who Has Friends". Wow, that was a very powerful message through the entire movie. Only problem was, I have had not so good things happen to me and I actually do not have people that I would consider my friends. LOL IMAGINE THAT! I must be a failure then.
I like several genres , I don't have like one single favorite. And some of these are so broad like 'drama' that it becomes almost meaningless.
horror
sci fi
mystery
drama
foreign
animation
indie
I even like action movies and comedies, but those genres are usually like 90% commercial crap and 10% good movies, so I am just more picky when it comes to them. I do actually love a good comedy, it's just that there aren't many good ones so I wouldn't list it as a favorite genre.
I LOATHE the gemre confusingly labeled 'romantic comedies'.
They are neither romantic nor funny.
Sci Fi/ fantasy
Star Wars
Star Trek
Lord of the Rings
Harry Potter
The Matrix
More than one but a favorite would be Italo-westerns, aka "spaghetti westerns". many of the films have been remastered and released on DVD and some on blu-ray in recent years. My collection has grown pretty large.
Some favorites would of course include Sergio Leone's "Dollars trilogy", featuring Eastwood but my all-time favorite film, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, may bill Eastwood at the top but the real star and central character of the film is Eli Wallach as Tuco.
Others:
Django
The Great Silence
The Mercenary
Cemetery Without Crosses
Death Rides a Horse
Bandidos
I could go on and on. It's a fun genre. Foreign films in general are my greatest love.
I'm not really into westerns at all, but I watched True Grit and I like it.
shareFunny thing is I'm not a fan of American westerns.
shareOh, I'm sorry. I don't know what Italo-western is, I assume those movies are Italian movies but set in Western America? But Clint Eastwood is an American actor? I'm confused. Off to Wikipedia for some info...
shareThe producers, directors and most but not all actors were Italian. Many but not all were filmed in Spain and there were a number of Spanish actors also. I say Italo or spaghetti westerns but two that I listed are actually French made films. The films were set in the American west, specifically the southwest, typically near the Mexican border or in Mexico. The Tabernas Desert in Spain looks very much like parts of the American southwest. Eastwood was an American TV actor dissatisfied with where his career was going, who was either 'discovered' by Leone or was suggested by another actor, depending on who you talk to. Either way he became an international box office star by the end of the Leone trilogy, paving the way for his great success in American film.
I'll leave it there.
Yeah, seems like all of the Eastwood films you mentioned are in my movie package over the last several days, including one by Leone starring Burt Reynolds titled Navajo Joe; kind of reminiscent of when he played the half-breed Quint in the old Gunsmoke series .
shareNavajo Joe also has the very beautiful Nicoletta Machiavelli. A pretty good spaghetti overall.
shareYes, it definitely had the Leone, spaghetti style, from what I saw of it. And the co-star you mention caught my eye in the opening credits because of her intriguing name, Machiavelli
shareYes, she was a direct descendant. She appeared in a handful of spaghettis, including starring in an awful one "Garter Colt" would be the English title. She lived the last 20+ years of her life in Seattle,WA teaching Italian at the university and returning home to Italy as a tour guide.

Science Fiction: 2001: A Space Odyssey

I'm currently re-watching The Grey on IFC. Good flick. I definitely have a liking for this genre:
Sands of the Kalahari
Jaws
The Ghost and the Darkness
The Edge
Frozen
