Lars Von Trier

I've seen a few movies, curious what you all think of him, and/or his movies.

reply

Can't say that I'm a fan, but I've seen most of his movies out of curiosity. Melancholia was pretty great. I kept thinking about it for days when I first watched it.

reply

Same, can't say I'm a fan... Not bad, but not great.

I just put on "Melancholia" -- is the entire thing in slow-motion?

reply

Not at all, there are only bits that are in slow motion..

reply

Terrible.

I have a love/hate thing with his movies.
He does interesting things visually, I think as a director he is very talented.
But it's his stories that I hate. He writes them all himself, so that is the problem I have with him. All his stories are just too sadistic.
Great director, but terrible writer.

reply

Antichrist... sick and twisted (can be a plus), but pointless.

reply

I've really tried to understand his movies but I have to admit I'm lost. He must have something though because he attracts a lot of pretty good talent.

reply

I liked Breaking the Waves, Dancer in the Dark, and Dogville the best. I've never read his interviews or any in depth biographies so I have no idea how he is as a person. I've heard the sadistic label thrown around but unlike a cheap horror movie you usually feel genuine empathy for his protagonists so I don't get what people mean by that. Some people like to write about the happy parts of life, he just focuses on the painful aspects.

reply

I should amend my answer because you've reminded me that I really liked Breaking the Waves. I didn't know he did that one. It was the first time I saw Stellan Skarsgard and I thought he was good in that.

reply

Yes both he and Emily Watson stood out as first class talents in that one.

reply

I am definitely a fan of him

reply

Melancholia was mesmerizing.
