Does Anyone Else Find Immigration Debates Ridiculous?
My view is that the world population has almost doubled since the '80s and not in a uniform manner consistent with where the economic wealth lies.
At the same time, in many of these countries where that wealth does lie, you have opposing political ideologies arguing over controlling the numbers they "allow" in, as if it will make a blind bit of difference.
If you look at the world as a system overall, It's like an osmosis effect. You cannot stop the balancing taking place just by saying "Oh, we don't want any more people here, we need to control our borders". It's going to happen anyway. That's why you see boat loads with dozens / hundreds of people, cramped up in vessels, drowning when they capsize. Take out the individual human angle and just look at it sheer volume. That one fails but others make it through. And they aren't going to stop coming.
So sure, through policy you can attempt to manipulate the effect. But in reality, it's only going to have a miniscule effect. You may as well shake your fist and start howling at the moon. Or go down to the beach and think you can stop the tide coming in by raising your palm to it...
