Is there any downside for Pence if he removes Trump?

In the short term of course the hardcore Trump fans will be mad at him. But if Pence removes Trump that would make him the 46th President of the United States. He would go down in history as one of the presidents. As a former president he would get lifetime secret service protection. Also, the fact that he would have such a short tenure as president would make him a curiosity for future generations. This could potentially make him more well known than many other former presidents.
Other than short term anger from Trump fans (who already don't like Pence because he certified the votes) is there any downside for him in using the 25th amendment to remove Trump?

Pence already refused invoking the 25th.

Besides, the 25th is only for mentally or physically incapable. If they use "mental", Trump and his lawyers could easily contest it and he would be right back in power within 72 hours so this would be an effortless, futile, and waste of time.

He is certainly not going to resign so that only leaves "impeachment" which can takes months for an actual trial that if successful, it would only accomplish in preventing him from serving office again, which is basically their goal.

The problem with Vice President Pence is, while he's a nice guy, and a good Christian; he's a total pushover. You think President Bush was a winner of the rubber backbone award, Pence is the winner of the no backbone award.

He probably only betrayed Trump because he was threatened in private.
