Kirk Douglas turns 100. What are your favorite performances?

As you can see from the title, Kirk Douglas turns 100 on December 9. As a way to celebrate him, what are your favorite performances by him?

Mine are:

1. Lust for Life (as Vincent Van Gogh)
2. Ace in the Hole
3. Detective Story
4. The Bad and the Beautiful
5. Spartacus

Other mentions: Paths of Glory, Out of the Past

Happy Birthday, Kirk.

A very good, though possibly not great, actor, but he or his agents sure picked some wonderful parts. Has any other of the old Hollywood "superstars" appeared in so many, and so varied, classics?

For me his best was his first co-starring role: "Out of the Past" (1947) which established his character as ruthless, charming and cunning. For a very different role see his first movie, "The Strange Love of Martha Ivers" (1946) in which he was a bit miscast, and overshadowed by the stars, Heflin, Stanwyck and Liz Scott. Still a helluva good part to kick off your career, though.

One movie I liked him in, and rarely gets a mention these days, is "There Was a Crooked Man..." (1970). I am not big on westerns, but I liked that one.
