Is anyone here from the old Need To Know boards on imdb? That board was amazing. I wasn't a regular there, but people were always able to answer the most random questions. I'm surprised the moviechat boards are fairly active. I've only recently heard of MC, but I'm relieved it exists.

Well, I was pretty much a regular on that board. But I couldn't answer that many questions.
It was indeed a shame that IMDB decided to close their boards, as it seems that this site will never get the same kind of traffic.
Bringing this thread back up. I was a regular there under 2 names, Bargle and Bargle77 for 17 years. After the shutdown, the core people went to different sites or dropped off movies in general. I really miss being able to help people remember things. I've been spending time at another board, but its' INTK section is pretty slow. I don't think I've ever helped anyone there.
shareI try to check out this board regularly, but it doesn't compare to the original on IMDb. They had a good thing going there until Amazon took over the site and decided to shut down all of the boards. They claimed it was due to too much troll activity, but that could have been remedied by banning the offending users.
I wonder if they regret closing the boards. Probably not.
Before the boards closed down, an insider posted on imdb and said the troll thing was a lie. Imdb only said it was because of trolls. They made that their official PR release. But it was really because they were being cheap. It was something money related, that had nothing to do with trolling or rude posts or even the ability to afford moderators. I forgot the specifics. I think it cost them money just to keep the boards open, period. Something like that.
shareI always thought the "troll" excuse seemed rather flimsy. Having something to do with money sounds more plausible, but come on!! Amazon, of all companies, couldn't afford to hire some moderators...!? Sorry, I'm not buying it.
They wanted to use IMDb as a vehicle for their DVD ads. One poster suggested they were afraid negative comments would affect movie sales. If that's the true reason then I'm not surprised.
So let's take a fun and informative board and close it. Another reason why I will have nothing to do with Amazon.
I figured it was a failure to make money from the old boards. A lot of admins would be needed to keep the junk off and too many thin-skins were probably crying at the drop of a hat. It's unfortunate. I know I visit IMDB a lot less since they dropped the boards.
shareI think the economic reasons for censoring the message boards is more related to their ability to control commentary in general. If you're a member of Amazon Prime or a registered Amazon customer you can make comments on products as long as they're verified as consumers of that media visa vis BluRay/DVD/Streaming/subscription purchases. They don't want free-range posters staking claim to their website for their own agendas, and that includes fans of movies or movie actors, not just trolls.

shareI went on that board a lot. There were movie EXPERTS on there. You could give the tiniest detail and someone on there recognized the film. Hope some are here and the rest find their way here.

I've been promoting this site on Reddit and other user forums, but it really hasn't caught on as a solid replacement.
