While the movie was definitely woke, I felt that it made sense for there to be a gay couple because if it was a straight couple, the responsibility of the sacrifice would most definitely fall upon the man, unless he doesn't have the balls to do with it. With two guys, it lets you wonder a bit more which one of them is going to take the initiative.
