I agree thank you for letting me know someone else saw it that way. In the original play (though I never saw it) from what I've read it's obvious the son is made up, but in the movie although most say the same thing & that the door bell was just bells Elizabeth Taylor ran into going upstairs but someone did come to the door and Richard Burton spoke to the person , Honey heard the conversation and watched him eat the telegram. So they did have a son who was killed that night I don't want to explain it all but that part if you are paying attention is true. Finally someone else saw the same as I did ty.
