Sydney in The Man in the White Suit. I loved the way he played the character.
There were bits and pieces at the beginning that I liked, but as you say, messy. I love Baz Luhrman movies but the comic book part was a little cringey for my taste, though I liked the young Elvis scene overall, and Elvis's introduction/first show. I just think they should have recut and rearranged the first 30mins to get a better flow. Moulin Rouge has a similar frantic edit at the beginning but I think that works to establish the strange bohemian musical world the characters inhabit.
Once it really got going, around the time the Colonel and Elvis talked on the Ferris Wheel, I got into it and pretty much enjoyed the rest.
Even though the 90s one is more lavish and less stagey than the 1950s version, I just preferred Jose Ferrer's performance, he really embodied Cyrano for me and pushed it over the edge to be my favourite version. But the 1990 film is still worth a watch.
Jerry all the way, though Dean made Jerry funnier and their chemistry is unmatched.
The Nutty Professor
The Stooge
The Ladies Man
Really hard to pick, I love his early work with Dean Martin, and his work with Frank Tashlin is amazing, and the films he directed from '60 to '65 are great. Such underrated movies!
That scene was amazing. His quiet sobbing is just so tragic, you feel exactly what the character is going through. I know Judy is what people first think of with this film, and she was wonderful in this, but it wouldn't have meant as much without Mason's performance.
Gym Attendant: Are you hurt?
Professor Kelp: Well, if a man with an ulcer and a splinter in his finger and a nail in his foot was then struck by lightning, if you could say that man was not hurt then yes you could say I’m not hurt.
Also love Buddy's lines like
"Hello, stale ones"
"Write nice"
In the graphic novel this was based on, her and one of the other children grow into teenagers and have sex (although they are mentally still 6, which is super creepy tbh), and since everything is accelerated, she gets pregnant instantly. I'd think the movie will follow this.
