"A Child Called 'It'" was autobiographical; it wasn't written by the brother but by the boy himself.
Another thing to add, though, is that "mob mentality" plays a huge role in this. It's very likely that not one of those kids (within the home or the neighborhood ones) would've treated Sylvia that way on their own as individuals. But unfortunately when you put people together, in small numbers or large, they're more likely to go with the crowd, so to speak, and that seems to be what happened here, as horrifying as it is.
I forced myself to get through it, because I liked everyone else, but I just couldn't stand her whatsoever. It could've been great, but she just ruined it for me :(
Well this reply is stupid, so I'm glad to see the account has been deleted.
You're conflating pedophiles with child molesters, and that's an issue. Most child molesters aren't pedophiles, and most pedophiles aren't child molesters.
Pedophiles don't choose to have those feelings and attractions, and many of them would never even consider acting on those feelings, because they know how doing so could destroy lives (not just their own).
Get your head out of your ass before you keep saying stupid shit.
Thank you for this comment so much.
Have you ever been a teenage girl? Let alone one who was carefully groomed and then raped by a predator like that?
Really, dude. "Tantrums"?
They would've most likely sent plain-clothed officers in an unmarked car to pick her up.
Sure, but that's not real life.
The sad part with this movie is that it showed that this girl came from a loving home with very involved parents, a typical "great family life", and yet it still can happen.
I get what the others have said, about him subtly manipulating everyone, but you raise a very good point: if the water and electricity had killed Vince and Gabe, what was the killer's plan for turning off the electricity after that?
It seems like there are way too many variables for that to have worked like it did, or for the killer to know that that's how it would've happened.
I mean for shit's sake, Gabe shot holes in the wall and fucking spidered across there to turn off the power, AFTER Vince had let him out of his cuffs to do that, etc. Just so much that could've very easily gone a different way.
Then again real-life profilers can be incredibly specific with their "predictions" (for lack of a better word), so I guess it's possible the guy knew how things would unfold.
They were all still just in training to become profilers, but I'm sure that the killer was already way smarter than all of them anyway.
You do know that bullets fired into water don't go very far, don't you? I was pleasantly surprised with the accuracy of that bit.
These people are *in training to become profilers*. So they'd have the smarts at a basic level, but they're nowhere near "elite profilers" who've been doing it for years.
Still, they're FBI agents at the very least, so they should be smarter than they were anyway.
Those ones in the beginning were all fake, I thought. I could see them making the place smell like decomp, but I highly doubt he'd have killed tons of cats just for that.
Plus they had a casette tape that was just the sound of flies buzzing.
Fucking a, thank you!
That's just the way that actress talks, unfortunately.
I feel like if any of them had done any sort of investigation of even the first crime scene they'd have figured shit out a lot sooner. These people are all supposed to be agents/detectives yet they all seemed to go into Average Citizen mode after the first murder.
But you're right, that's the first thing Kilmer points out in the forensics lab, that they can do blood tests.
True, by the time they woke up they didn't have enough time before the next trap to run all of their blood tests, but they could've at least started the tests. But nope, they just dumbed their way to death.
A lot of these things were answered in the movie.
The teacher clearly goes above and beyond with his classes and tests, which is why the detective (LLCJ) was sent to check this out (to find out if Kilmer is off his rocker or whatever). So it's intimated at least that Kilmer's is the only class that does this annual island trip. He says that the Navy lends the island to him for one weekend a year (sounds more like a favor than a rental). Maybe Kilmer pays for these extras on his own, or maybe the FBI pays, but either way, the price probably isn't exorbitant.
The forensics and computer lab is already there in the building for the Navy's normal use, so that's not something extra that they're footing the bill for just for the class's one-time benefit.
And "the elaborate set-ups that would take hours to put together...where did the killer find the time?" -- the killer clearly explains that at the end: when everyone was knocked out with the coffee drug, that gave the killer time to set up all of the rest of the traps (they were out for most of the day, giving them plenty of time).
Okay, thank you SO much! I just finished the movie a few minutes ago and was like, "What the fuck was that with Gabe??" It seemed like such a huge red herring that made no sense at all -- like he just guns this guy down, after playing nice the whole time, then goes to try and kill Sarah, and THEN she and he are all friendly on the way home? The fuck?
Your explanation makes sense of it all, though. Sarah thinks Gabe shot Lucas, while Gabe thinks Sarah shot Lucas, etc.
When Lucas was pulling out all of the cords from his jacket and talking about remotes and stuff, I thought he just meant the other traps he set. Damn, thank you again!
The other day I saw someone write "kind've", and I just wanted to scream.
