I haven't seen the film in awhile, but iirc, the general said that they had installed a nuclear warhead on the craft that Jeff Goldblum was in. I think they set it off as they were re-entering the atmosphere.

I know this is late, but my guess is if the foot went for broke and tried banks and other high profile targets, that they would get more people on their tail, where as they can steal goods and resell them for flat out cash with no questions.

I'm re-watching the movie now and I just came on here to say the exact same thing! I was 10 when it first came out, but it also spoke to me in some way. Now I am proud to say that i am officially an environmental activist and eco-warrior!!! Isn't it amazing how what we watch as a child influences our overall personalities?
