Sorry for late reply Fenton but I really like this explanation - never noticed that connection - thanks!
Well, as Juror #8 was fond(a) of saying, "It's possible." ; )
And yeah, banter is fine - there was a lot of it in the movie - lines about the baseball game, the building across the street, the guy selling marmalade, but all of these were just one-off lines that never took more than a few seconds.
Why devote several MINUTES of screen time to conversations that go absolutely nowhere?
Seemed out of place in the script to me...
Hey Slimone - I know this post is 3 years old but just wanted to comment that I'm pretty sure Cash's real voice was "mixed" with Phoenix's for the movie.
I have seen this movie probably 15 times (7 times in the theatre alone!) and I thought the same thing as you when I first saw it (Roger Ebert agreed - in his review he said when he closed his eyes while watching the movie he couldn't tell the difference between Phoenix and Cash's voice) but Phoenix simply sounds WAY too similar to Cash to be all him.
This was confirmed (for me at least) by listening to he official soundtrack - Phoenix's voice sounds MUCH different from how it sounds in the actual movie. To be honest, if they did mix in Cash's voice I'm kind of glad they did as it really adds to the atmosphere/believability of the movie, but wish they had of kind of acknowledged it at some point (in the credits maybe...?) I always wondered about the legality of such mixing...
Thanks so much for the link! Sounds like an interesting one, though the reviews don't look too kind ; (
OMG thank you! The entire movie, I was like, this guy looks really familiar ... who does he remind me of? I looked him up to see if I knew any of his other movies but no ... but Cousin Larry - thats it!!
Sorry I know you answered this 7 years ago, but do you happen to know what year this 'Secrets' movie was released, or actors or anything? I searched for it on IMDB but couldn't find anything. Very curious. Years ago I wrote a book about 7 friends sitting around getting drunk and they each decide to reveal their biggest secrets, and it was also titled 'Secrets.' I never tried to publish it - just thought it funny that there's a movie with a very similar plot - would love to check it out.
Nice post. I agree with your rankings and ratings almost exactly (Inherent Vice would be at the bottom of the list for me with maybe 4/10 or less - I found it exhausting to watch). Your top 3 are my top three as well - 3 perfect films. But I also agree with what a poster said below - as long as he's making films, there's always a chance that Anderson will knock another one out of the park. Here's hoping!
Agreed - every time she came on screen I felt myself being pulled out of the film. Her cynicism and negativity were totally out of place, and it made me start to dislike the main character because he kept taking her s*** without saying anything. He may not have been the most stand-up guy, but he was never shown as a pushover until she arrived. Literally everything she said to him was negative (you're ugly, an idiot, boring etc) but he just kept taking it. Seemed like a weird decision on the part of the filmmakers to have her behaving in such a way, more like a caricature than an actual person. Sadly, it really took away form my enjoyment of the film...
Nice one Strntz!
Respectfully, I must disagree.
I totally get how the 'jumping the gun of social niceties' could be the joke, but I'm still not convinced. I just watched it again and it doesn't add up.
Frank WAS paying attention; he's literally looking Ludwig in the eyes and he doesn't miss a beat when he responds. Classic Nielsen is oblivious and assumes that Ludwig is saying that he (Ludwig) is a Lieutenant, like how men sometimes state their own name when shaking hands. I understand the "feeling" doesn't really make sense but thats the absurdity of ZAZ.
Imagine someone walking up to Drebin to shake hands and saying "Frank." What else could he respond with other than "The feeling is mutual" ?
Anyways, I'll leave you with this:
Jane: "He was caucasian. You know, a white guy, with a moustache. About 6 foot 3."
Frank: "Awfully big moustache."
Sorry, I know this post is 9 years old but I don't think anyone answered it properly (or maybe I've just always interpreted it differently). I think the joke is that when Vincent says 'Lieutenant" he is referring to the fact that Frank is a Lieutenant. Frank misinterprets it, thinking Vincent is saying that HE (Vincent Ludwig) is a Lieutenant, hence: "the feeling is mutual."
It's kind of like the "Cigarette?" "Yes, I know" gag from Airplane.
Haha me too. I can still remember a time in my life when I couldn't close my eyes without seeing those falling blocks...literally.
"Djaws"
The 'D' is silent.
Wow, thats really interesting, never heard that before. I'm about halfway through Coda and do agree that it feels like a much tighter film. Very curious to see the ending now.
I've been watching this movie for nearly 30 years and it never occurred to me to wonder why it was called 'The Naked Gun' until about 20 mins ago (oh the things we think about when we're in the shower!) Logged in here to see if anyone had an answer. Reading the responses below, there are some good answers I guess. The idea that they wouldn't want it to sound like "Police Academy" makes sense, but it still doesn't explain why they chose "The Naked Gun" specifically. My first thought on it was maybe it was a kind of reference to "The Nude Bomb." Nude/naked, gun/bomb. Both movies are spoofs. Kind of makes sense, but just an idea...
Have seen this movie at least 30 times and just noticed the bigger print of the picture above his bed when I watched it again yesterday, nice catch!
Also finally understood Docs reference to the photo when he says something like "photographic fakery...you cut off your brother's hair." Never got that until yesterday when I realized that Dave's hair/head was already beginning to disappear.
So many details, so many details!
Any idea which episode? Would love to see this, my son watches TT all the time...
Agreed. The bigger question would be, if its been 480 (?) days since this whole catastrophe started, would they even have running water?
I don't care if this comment is 2 years old - that made me laugh so hard I've got tears in my eyes, thanks!
Couldn't agree more.
Everything was just... "M'eh." (shrugs shoulders)
