I was also thinking about that. As the main character has joined a new companion (the female). The female started getting nervous as she learned that babi was above them. Based on her reaction, it seems it could has also been possibly that he spawned below them.
But yeah, it makes it really hard to believe that he actually spawns randomly: A wrong new neighbour, a few floors too low, - with all that bullshit he was doing to others - he would have no chance.
Of course it has nasty food scenes, but i think much less as in the first movie. It has much more focus on gore this time.
What was his Debut as an actor in Hollywood? I only see danish productions.
Speak no Evil is also produced by danish and a dutch production company and got financed by the danish 'Det Danske Filminstitut': Tax Payer money.
In Europe its very common, that countries have public funds to support local artists and culture in general. You can apply your Projects and ask for money. A board of people decides if the project get support.
In germany there are already rules in place to only finance projects that fit a checklist, with a lot of diversity points. Its nearly impossible to get a movie financed by public funds. And very similar to DEI by big companies.
I dont know how its handled in Denmark, but it seems that in general they taking more risks while making movies.
But maybe he could already checked the marks, by adding the dutch couple and their babysitter 'Muhajid'.
So beside all conspiracies, the production of the movie is pretty much independent and not influenced by hollywood - only in the good old arts of film making :)
I like that the movie can be applied to different current issues. I think it depends on your personal focus and environment you live in.
In your interpretation i would also add that kidnapping the child could also be applied to the fact that the government (and also the media) takes more and more parental tasks and things like all-day schools are disconnecting the child from their parents. In Germany it is now possible for an 14 year old child to get a gender transformation against the will of their parents, if a doctor confirms a gender dysphoria. You can imagine how difficult it is to find an understanding specialist in this day and age, for a teenager with an smartphone and lgbtq-bubble. (Yet another applicable issue :D)
But i most likely see the connections to the culture clash of left- vs right-leaning persons. Especially the rising conflicts of uncontrolled migrations from islamic countries to europe. In parts they live a much more conservative life, and in some cases dont accept the freedom in europe and abuse the kindness, tolerance and naive pacifism.
<spoiler>The stoning in the end speaks for itself.</spoiler>
However, if you want to get a movie made you have to be very subtle with this topic. So the movie can mostly be applied to the general conflict of conservative and progressive, based vs woke, brutal vs pacifist, strong vs weak.
So the chosen ending was quite a bold move in my opinion.
And i guess its good as it is, everybody can apply their fears but get the same message:
Don't be like Bjørn and Lousie: Fucking do something!
You will have to fight for your freedom. Else the stronger will take everything, even your live.
When Anna and Paul are meeting their friends, you could consider that her husband got his leg broken and that Peter holding him and the Kid as 'hostage'. She also just saw that their dog got killed. Shock, fear, naive thinking nothing bad will happen. Its kind of explainable, but i understand what you mean.
I also found it even more unrealistic when they sit in front of them in a couch, knowing they gonna get killed and they do NOTHING. Fuckin fight ... its your last chance, god damn! :D
Locking Doors in Germany/Austria. Normally when you inside your house, you don't lock it. But older (shown) generations are/were tending to lock the door when it is late at night. But when you at home, you mostly put your keys either inside the lock, on a 'keyholder' next to the door or leave it inside your jacket and put in the wardrobe next to the door.
No i didn't saw a scene explaining, where they got the key and when exactly they locked the door. But i also didn't find it necessary to show it.
Maybe the 'keyholder' is a german thing, because i didn't found an english translation for it. Its called "Schlüsselbrett" in germany, and is still very typical in houses. It is a dedicated small board, placed on the wall next to the door. Which holds all keys, ready to pick up when you go. Not shown in the movie. But for me it is not a plothole, when intruders are in your house, they could easily find a keychain.
In Germany your door lock can be accessed from both side with the key. As i know in america you mostly have just a turning switch. This is mostly reserved to public spaces (Toilets, Hotel rooms, Offices etc.).
But its getting more a thing now, especially with different smart home solutions. The movie is from 1997.
Had immediately the same impression. Fury Road was truly an eye-candy, cgi was used only where it is needed.
Now the cars are fully cgi, so the environment. Bad animation, bad composing. Distracting as usual.
Especially because George Miller and the hole production/marketing campagne was so proud of the fact, that most of the car chase scenes in Fury Road were practically.
We all loved it for exactly that.
Now this. Why?
4. The version i watched didn't had subtitles, so i don't know what they was saying when - i assume - his mother and his brother has visited him.
My Guess: He and the main character were good guys and are getting close to each other.
Both characters shared the same destiny in their own circle and are very similar to each other.
Rashid has snitched the person, who respected him the most. Perhaps with same argument: "Im about to get out anyhow, and the other guys will beat the shit out of me every day, if i don't tell him how i get the drugs / bring him to the cold storage room ..."
He didn't thought that they would kill him. After that he felt guilty.
Yeah, a little bit cheesy - but im glad that they showed that both characters (and their circles) had their flaws and didn't stylized one side to be moral superior.
While this post was on the original IMDB-Board 6 years ago, you probably never read this answer. But anyways:
1. I think the movie doesn't really show, that the inmates would be far more checked by the wardens. Especially when they go to work. We just see them working in the kitchen and not how they get there - mostly there would be multiple checks if something is stolen from the workplace. (One time it is portrayed that the kitchen chef checks, if all knifes are brought back). You want the illegal stuff away from your body as quick as possible.
2. We don't know what security process the Visitors had to surpass, to be allowed to enter the meeting-room. But you can guess it is like a check-in on an airplane.
Otherwise: One guy is somehow able to get the drugs and hide it in his ass. Either he and his visitor are taking the risk or he has other privileges:
In Europe it is very common that prisoners are free to go outside during the day and only have to stay at night in the prison. Mostly to go therapy, work and get integrated back to society.
In Denmark 60% of all prisoners have this privilege. But mostly they are in special "(semi-)open prisons": only long sentences have to be in regular "closed prisons".
3. I was also wondering about that, because where i am from, the prisoners are also not allowed to have cash. But it seems that it is allowed ion Denmark to have money/cash: https://ep2022-dev.tunaweb.com/wp-content/uploads/Denmark-EN-prisoner-information-sheet.pdf
Also it wasn't so much money as you maybe think: 50 DKK is the smalles bank note and 7USD worth. In europe you pay easily 10$ per gramm marijuana on the street. The more you go north it is getting more expensive. I guess you could get easily 200 DKK for 1g Marijuana in prison.
Furthermore as it isnt really shown, it could also be hashish - which is much more dense and sometimes even more expensive: You can easily get 10-15g in one plastic-egg.
Columbus has a better story to tell, but influence wise i would also suggest Martin Luther, who singlehandedly reformed the church, is grounding father of evangelical protestants and translated the bible, so it was understandable to anyone. (a big thing at this time ;-)
Also Guthenberg got a huge influence with his introduction of (industrial) printing and making Information spreadable/reproducable, as it was never possible before.
Together with the translation of the Bible - and even without - it was a big step for humanity. In my opinion at least in a league with discovering the "new world".
Than we got also one more recent person:
Konrad Zuse: Built the first Computer based on the binary-system - as we are still using today.
Thank you for the suggestions, i didnt know some of them yet.
I would add to the list 'Circle' (2015) which is more a psychological chamber play, but matches many other aspects.
And what are you thinking about the 'Cube' Movies? There is a japanese remake coming this month ... i think this alone should qualify for it.
