There was a film called The Strange Love of Molly Louvain in 1932. It's possible that they just copied the idea.

He's very good in A Bridge Too Far. The scene where they are discussing drop zones can be watched over and over again. All the scenes in that film with him in are excellently done in my opinion.
I'm surprised there are no replies to this, as the (23 mins) video is excellent viewing. I wasn't sure who he was talking about at one point though, because of the editing. It was where he is talking about somebody quitting the business and going into real estate: wikipedia confirms that it was director Brian Hutton.
