We got the backstory by following the newspaper clippings on the wall and the dad's whiteboards.
There was a meteor crash, so I took that as these being aliens, they are blind and their skin is bulletproof. So much is learned by the wall of his basement.
Probably because if someone goes missing and there is an investigation, they could find evidence of a murder.
