Read this and see the courtroom descriptions, and how some of the elderly were "diagnosed." Then how the police washed their hands of it. If anything, comparing this to what the Shafer guy and his people did, the extent of the operation is actually underplayed in the movie, with the reality being much worse.

Pretty much a legalized racketeering operation. Some of the minions that drew too much heat got arrested but the main guy is still at large and continuing to do this. Nothing happened to the corrupt judges or those that were signing off the certificates.

I would have had a problem if it was about a man with the exact same story.

It's not about her being a woman (although that makes it even worse) it's about the writing being atrocious.

Let me put it this way: no mob will leave the lake without making sure she doesn't surface in 10 minutes. And it doesn't matter if it was a "he" or a "she". And how she takes on the mafia is surreal, again, doesn't matter if it's a he or a she ..

It's as far fetched as John Wick single-handedly killed all mobsters. It's just a movie, come on. Movies are unrealistic.

Well, Wick has a hitman background. Not just a hitman background but THE BEST hitman background.

Based on that background we do expect him to kick ass and kill all mobsters. We even EXPECT that.

It's not at all far fetched.

Movies are unrealistic but need to be logical and have some internal consistency.

If we see superman having superpowers in a superman movie we don't expect random people having superpowers in a superman movie just because "it's just a movie".

Even the best of the best hitmen are not supermen. They can't do what John Wick does. And he's old. It's SUPER unrealistic. Same as Taken franchise.

But I like those movies. They're fun.

In this movie they established early that Marla is not an ordinary woman. She's a super despicable amoral human trash with "court-fu" instead of "gun-fu."

Ngl, I think they set the tone wrong at first. As if the movie is a smart, semi-realistic dramatic take of a serious issue.

It would be clearer if they did the scene when Marla has been taken by the mob as the opening, and she would say, "you might be wondering how I could get into this situation..."

*record scratch*

And only after that then we get back to the real opening of this movie.

John Wick sometimes is inconsistent too. People die when shot in John Wick, they're not Supermen, but then he fell down from a 5 stories high building, hitting everything on the way, smashed the pavement, only to wake up and walk away.

But I don't totally disagree with you. John Wick is a better movie, because like you said, we EXPECT him to be able to kill all the mob and to survive anything thrown at him.

While this movie seemingly suggests that we should expect her to die a miserable death, only to change mind mid-movie. Then it suggests that we're supposed to root for her, only to kill her in the end, unsatisfyingly.
