Is this 4K HDR or not? Amazon won’t say

Some of the icons say UHD, but the actual description on the app just says HD.
Amazon has done this before. Sometimes the 4K UHD version is a separate entry (icon) you have to find on your own. Other cases, as with Knives Out, the pay-to-stream version was 4K but the Prime version was not.

This is 2021.
I didn’t spent four grand on an OLED TV to get last century’s technology.

It’s bad enough that Amazon refuses to support Dolby Vision or Dolby Atmos.
Are they deliberately not offering even their own releases like Tomorrow War in 4K UHD, or are they just so sloppy with they don’t notice or don’t care? (There are many films with multiple listings with varying quality and info.)

UPDATE: As of tonight 7/5/21 the description now says UHD and the display on my Apple TV when I swipe down says 4K HDR Dolby Atmos. But not yesterday.

It’s 4KKK since it has lack of black representation and the usual fat black comic sidekick coward her pendejo

did you knew that over 90% of 4k releases are actually upscaled 1080p releases because they either lost the original masters of the film or never filmed in that resolution to begin with? Movies are, as usual, the tech that lags behind everyone else.

Did you know that whenever someone says “over 90%” they are making it up 100%?

Seriously, there is only a grain of truth in your claim. There are many genuine 4K releases on disc and streaming, and nearly everything major today is filmed in 4K (indies and minor TV series excepted). The last major studio release I can confirm to have been filmed in a lesser resolution was Skyfall (2012).

What *is* true is that almost every theater gets a version that is only 2K, despite the theater advertising 4K. So yes, going to a theater today often means paying a premium to see a version inferior to what’s available in your home. Guess they were hoping no one would notice.

I dont remmeber the exact percentage the study found, 93% or something like that. Thats irrelevant. Im sure its lower now as more releases are new. But during the book of "re-release everything in 4K blueray" most of them were upscales because they studios didnt keep the original masters for higher resolution. So they upscaled the existing 2k blueray. Or in some horrrible cases they upscaled the DVD release. While i agree that almost everything filmed nowadays is produced at that resolution, that does not necessarely mean they keep that version if they arent making a 4k release.

If they were filmed on film then 4k is quite possible ...

The Princess Bride 4k:

"Reportedly struck from a new restoration and remaster of the original 35mm camera negatives, the native 4K transfer shows sharper, cleaner lines in the stone architecture of the castle and the wood-plaster homes of villagers. The individual leaves of trees and blades of grass are always distinct, even in the extreme wide shots, and every crack, crevice and pockmark in the rock formations are discrete and easy to make out. The stitching in the many elaborate costumes can be better appreciated and admired as they are highly detailed at all times with the embroidery of outfits looking quite striking."

reply

It is impossible to get 4k resolution from 35mm negatives because the 35mm film cannot store the image in such quality (outside lab conditions). It certainly will look better than 2k, but in this case the source material was NOT natively 4k.

You have no idea what you’re talking about.
