Why were they sending middle age people in the future to fight a war?

They also seemed out of shape, had no army training, no clear leader, vague instructions, they were simply teleported in the future just to be killed fast by the aliens, what were they supposed to do there...?
I expected some sort of twist at the end, like maybe they were trying to get rid of excess population, because the future was overcrowded or something like that, but it never happened...

They mentioned they had to be old because only people no longer alive in the future time period could go.

The lack of training is a bit of a mystery.

Accidentally dropping your troops into a red hot LZ from 1000 feet with no parachutes was also a bit of a faux pas.

I think it was mentioned they were supposed to have a week of training and then a week of combat.
Dunno what the point of it was, besides cannon fodder.
I suppose they were desperate by that point.

They weren't supposed to even land there, but I also don't get how the possibility of a misfire never occurred to the future people, lol.

As I recall they were supposed to appear about 10 feet above the ground. They were specifically warned about that and to be prepared. Their appearance ~1000 feet (or however high it was) was a malfunction. The whole machine was malfunctioning. They also said it was being held together by duct tape and string.

If only half a million people were alive in the future, shouldn't nearly anyone be draft eligible?

reply

Oh good point!

They had to skip training because of the energency attack on the research lab. There is a quick dialogue between Pratt and some commander from the future about this. As far as dropping them from 1000 feet, that was a computer glitch but they spent a whooping 1,5 seconds on explaining that and then forgot it. blink and you miss it.

I suspect the correct answer was to show that Chris Pratt truly has the best dad bod in our time.

reply

They spelled it out, albeit as speculation

Everyone they sent forward from the present was already dead before the war started

Everyone they sent back from the future hadn’t been born yet

The professor guy thought it might be to avoid paradox of meeting yourself

As for why from a storyline perspective, it’s not too clear other than it let the moviemakers place ordinary people in an extraordinary war

Same as zombie apocalypse flicks
