Don't watch if you cannot

suspend disbelief, especially in the fact that most civilians would not have been as tough as these folks....and tons more.

If you put all that aside, it's not all bad for this type of movie.

The biggest mistake is trying to nitpick the time travel stuff. Just like how with Terminator you shouldn't spend too much time worrying about the mechanics of time travel and if it all holds up, the same is true for this film.

As for the civilians, I'm not sure how tough they actually ended up being. We only see them a brief amount of time, being that a huge part of the movie is focused on Dan and his daughter by themselves, and much of that time is spent on them running away and getting fucked up by the aliens. The only offense they really had was to point and shoot and hope the creature falls down.

I would agree that, no, it's not "all bad." In fact I thought it was pretty good. It was a fun film with a surprising amount of heart and an interesting story.

This movie is the classic example of "Really entertaining if you don't think about it too much."

There was only really three civies that had any screen time. One was the geothermal CEO that actually got a leading role, other two basically just spotted one alien, shot blindly and sacrificed themselves in the tunnel. Id say if you picked a random couple thousand civvies, you could find at least two tought enough for that.

If the plot of a movie falls apart because the viewer has a fully functioning brain, it's a badly written movie. The exception being movies that are intentionally brainless fun, like the Fast and Furious series
