Seemed okay
About a 6.5/10. Not special enough. The philosophizing/anthropology is all very old material. Bill Murray did a decent job, but the film needed more ideas/insights.

shareKind of agree. I watched this film today and while it has a few good moments, it just never really gets any better from start to finish. It just pretty much stays the same.
Sofia's best movie is still Lost In Translation and its starting to look like she will never come close to matching it or beating it. haha...
We shall see. You know the old saying, never say never.
But OTR does have a similar feel to LIT. It almost feels like LIT part 2 in some ways because of Murray's appearance. Bill even does a singing part in OTR. haha..
But overall, this is supposed to be a comedy and yeah, it's just really not that funny. I'll have to give it a 5.8 out of 10.
Yup.
I wasn't that crazy about LiT. I mean it was okay, but if you watch it a second time, you feel like, what's the big deal. She mostly just filmed her vacation. Years before the film was made I visited Tokyo and did virtually all those things too. The specialness of it was just Murray's Rat Pack stuff and the weird choice of focusing on Scarlett's butt as the opening shot.
So maybe there is a third movie that is her best? Perhaps Somewhere: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1421051/reference/
By the way, Bill Murray used to do a LOT of singing on SNL. Practically every week he did his parody of a bad lounge singer. He did that so well that no lounge singer can do that kind of act in the same way anymore. They all have to be sort of self-ironic about it now.
I do remember that Murray SNL skit. Wow, that was a long time ago. lol...
It seemed kind of silly in this film though, it just wasn't funny or even good singing for that matter.
But I really liked LIT a lot. I might have to watch it again to see if it was just a first time viewing kind of thing but I think I'll still enjoy it. It's quite funny. LIT has a 95 rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Not that I care about ratings that much but 95 does seem a little too high. I think it's a solid 8.3 out of 10.
Seems like you would have related to the movie a lot more if you had 'been there done that' in Tokyo. Was it just Murray's acting style that turned you off or what? I'll say one thing about LIT, it's a very slow paced film, it's probably not for everyone. But I liked it for that very reason. It was slow but somehow Sofia was able to make an entertaining film out of it. It was quite the accomplishment in my view and did you know the budget for LIT was only $4 million? That's nuts... LIT ended up grossing over $100 mill worldwide. amazing return...
It's almost like Sofia tried to capture the same pacing and feel of LIT for this movie and it fell a little short.
Anyhow, I haven't seen Somewhere yet. I might check it out sometime.
