Tom Cruise ruined this franchise.

This is nothing like the M:I series. This is about him. His ego has destroyed the original concept. This is no group of operatives going under cover as a team. This is about a few out-dated old guys (and I believe that to be by design) assisting Cruise so he can look good. It would be "decent" as another type of movie, but as a M:I concept, it absolutely sucks.

I just wanted an Ilsa spinoff...

No shit!

The series was just a jumping off point, the films are lightyears more successful than the TV series ever was. Millions of people adore the films while not even knowing that the series existed.

Melton….EXACTLY!

And the TV series was pretty…meh.
Perfunctory, nothing special. Whereas the movies evolved the concept to extraordinary levels.

I mean…..did the OP see MI: Fallout?? How do you watch a movie like that and not love it?

The MI movies are the last and best of the great action movies. And Tom Cruise is the last of the great movie stars.

Enjoy it while you can, people.

If this movie would've come out any other summer that didn't involve "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" it would've done much better than it did and for that matter, everything else released last summer got steamrolled..

Cruise's whole career has been about him and his ego. Waste of time mostly, with few exceptions if there's heavyweight name behind the camera (Ridley Scott, Oliver Stone, Stanley Kubrick, Michael Mann...)

We clearly have a different definition for heavyweight directors...

They're pretty disappointing given how much potential they had. The even bigger problem is the story itself taking a back seat to the ever increasing stunts of Tom as they go along. All though more realistic and serious, these movies have become as dumb as the Fast and Furious flicks.

A movie series that has produced some of the best-reviewed action films of the past couple of decades and has grossed over $4 billion so far. If that's how Cruise's ego ruins franchises then I doubt many in Hollywood are complaining.
