When they were planning to replace TC with Renner as the new lead...

Was it because they thought TC's star power was waning? Base on how much emphasis and marketing TC has done about doing his own stunts, not just in MI, but also Top Gun... How can he be replaced now? It's like taking over a Jackie Chan franchise, but you're not Jackie Chan. How could it be done? I can't see another actor with the same dedication. Even in Ghost Protocol, when TC insisted on climbing the Burj Khalifa, Renner must have thought, "I'm going to replace this guy?" LOL! He will eventually be replaced because he is in his 60's, but I don't see how MI without TC as lead can ever be the same.

In MI4
Jeremy Renner wasn’t brought in to replace Cruise. The way Brad Bird wanted to shoot the movie he wanted actors at the same height as Tom. Renner secured the part. For “symmetry”, Simon Pegg had tested good with audience on MI3, also the same height as Tom, was brought back.
Partly to Brad Bird being huge James Bond fan and felt the film benefited having a “Q” character. In later James Bond films Q kind of mirrors Simon Pegg with his computer skills.
All 3 leads now the same height.
In conclusion Jeremy Renner was never a replacement.

The production also secured a very lucrative deal with BMW.
With references from BMW the production also secured a confidential agreement with Rolex. Rolex have never paid for product placement but might have made an exception with MI4. Rolex and its sister company Tudor was looking to secure a position in the US space for Tudor. Tudor , worn by TC, had only be available in Europe & Asia up until this point.
Apple. Also very selective on who they want to represent them on screen. When you see someone of film using a MAC or Iphone and the logo have a sticker over it – that production have been turned down.
