I see that you really didn't Eternals. I went in expecting the worst MCU film ever, and the first truly bad film of the bunch, bet left in awe. I rank it 10th, but in some ways I consider it the best they've done. It's the only "art house" film of the bunch, if that makes sense, and it plays more like Kurosawa or Fellini than a superhero film. What about it did you dislike so much?

reply

Really? You give all these mediocre movies such great scores? Are you only comparing them to comic book dreck like Catwoman and Superman 4? How would you compare Avengers with movies like Casablanca or the Godfather?

reply

What criteria are we using to compare them? Casablanca and The Godfather are so different from one another that even comparing those two films is a challenge, let alone comparing them to a modern superhero film.

I think of films as independent entities. I don't base my assessment of any one film in relation to any other. My favorite film of all time is Kurosawa's "Seven Samurai." My second-favorite is Preston Sturges' "The Lady Eve." I don't like the former better than the latter because in some sort of heads-up comparison, Eve fell a bit short. Rather, I think both are outstanding films, but something about Seven Samurai pulls me in just a tiny bit more than The Lady Eve.

Casablanca is another fantastic film, and one of my favorites. I've seen it several times on a big screen, and many more times at home, and it never gets stale. There is not direct way for me to compare it to The Avengers other than to say I think they are equally great films in their own way. Both are gripping entertainments, alternating between humor in one moment and suspense in another. Neither has a weak moment, nor does either drag for even an instant. No matter how many times I watch either of those films, I'm never waiting for one scene to finish so we can "get to the good part." Both films are entirely "good parts."

The Godfather is another story. I definitely appreciate aspects of it, and from a film-making standpoint it's quite impressive, but it falls flat for me in some ways. Mostly because I'm from a Sicilian family, and some of the events of the The Godfather are loosely based on real events that included distant family members, but The Godfather feels like a Hollywood-esque, glamorized, over-the-top, and at times simply inaccurate, version of a mob story. Goodfellas, on the other hand, plays like a documentary of Sicilians and mobsters, and I hold that film in the high regard that most seem to heap upon The Godfather.

reply

Call me old fashioned, but I like a story. I like well developed characters. I like watching good acting on screen with a range of emotions.

These movies are just simple ABC formula films where every event is predictable and the dialogue serves to simply move across the scenes to the next CGI diarrhea scene. The plot of the Avengers can really be described in a paragraph or two, as can most of the marvel movies.

The intelligent thought involved from making these movies was simply carried from the original comic book creators who developed the origins and core ideas behind the characters. And as such, these movies are better than some action movies that don't even have that. But don't be confused into thinking these are good movies.

reply

Personally, I think you're selling the Marvel films short. Most every non-MCU film I've seen does follow a simple ABC formula, doesn't bother to develop characters in any interesting way, and ends up being quite predictable, but that isn't something I've noticed in the MCU's offerings. In all honesty, I wonder how many you've even seen. If you have truly watched them, but can't appreciate Infinity War, The Winter Soldier, Eternals, Homecoming, Ragnarok, and honestly, nearly every film they've made, in the same way you can other, non-action films, it's possible you are either not paying attention, or are simply biased and don't have an open mind that a genre film can be a great film just as can any other.

Westerns are mostly interchangeable affairs, but there are a couple dozen westerns that are on the same level as the greatest films. Like superhero films, most may lack a certain "artiness," for lack of a better word, but they are still excellent, enjoyable, masterfully made films. You can find the same in the horror, action, and all other genres. Some films transcend their niche.

reply

Give me 1 specific example in the Avengers movie that required some thought involved.

reply

That's a pretty vague question. Required thought? Maybe give me an example of something in Casablanca that required thought so I get where you're coming from.

And honestly, we don't need to argue about this. I think you're selling a whole swath of films short, you think they're uniformly bad. Maybe that's just where we need to leave it?
