Is There Anything George & Margaret Could Have Done Differently?

After that uncomfortable dinner at the Weboy's house and their lunch with Lorna, it seems like the die was cast and events were likely to end in violence.

At that lunch, George & Margaret could have planned with Lorna for her and Jimmy to leave town on a different day. It would have required careful planning, but couldn't Lorna have used a payphone in town to call the Blackledges and arrange things? Of course, there's a good chance the Weboys would have eventually showed up at the Blackledge's doorstep and violence might have still been the end result.

Excellent tension in this one. And Lesley Manville (Ma Weboy) and Jeffrey Donovan (Bill Weboy) were such good villains. Hated them right from the start!

I think they should have just stayed out of it. But if they really needed to do something they should have done it more covertly as it was obvious just by looking at the Weboy's as well as hearing about the rep of the family on the way there that it was not going to end well.

What gets me is that the boy was with his mother. Good or bad you can't just assume you have more right to him than that.

Yeah, like...and I think this was just part of the film but...the boy was better off with Diane Lane for sure, than the weboys. But Diane Lane's own motivations I think were not exactly pure, and a lot of her emotions were certainly misguided.

I agree that Margaret's approach to the whole thing was very headstrong, but she certainly had the best intentions to protect her grandson and she also came to realize that she should have been a better mother-in-law to Lorna.

No she wasn't pure in her motivations either. She is very overbearing and hen pecked her husband into an early death. Then leaves the whole thing, including her husbands body and it's almost like none of it bothered her at all.

Overall it is just a really bad film.

reply

I personally wouldn't go so far as to say it's a bad film simply because she's not a great human being. I have other issues with the movie though.

I tried to put myself in George & Margaret's place and I could not have made peace with staying away if I knew my grandson and his mother were in a physically abusive situation (like what Margaret saw happen outside the store). I would definitely feel compelled to do something.

reply

True but would you have done it the way they decided to? Given the era they may have been more limited compared to now and the risk of going to the law/authorities is they may just put the child in a home where they get treated even worse until they sort the whole thing out.

The film is just bad really. Margaret ends up hen pecking her husband to the point where he ends up losing a hand and then his will to live. So he sets off on a suicide mission. She also leaves his body behind when she knows that it is important to him to be buried on the family land.

She is no more likable than the Weboy's.
