Lazy writing.....blacked out SPOILER...

What is it with screenplay writers that make them either so lazy or just lacking in imagination when it comes to pivotal scenes?

For example, in the build-up in the movie we are led to believe the Costner character is a retired super proficient police officer (by the vague reminiscing by the one sheriff) so what does he do? He gets overpowered in a hotel room by what he knows are dangerous thugs after he arms himself with a gun and has them at gunpoint. This scene could have been more easily dealt with in a more logical and creative way.

The illogic of this scene ruined the rest of the movie for me......

I’m sure the writer would try to counter with the idea that Ol’ George Blackledge was a better investigator than tactician, but that concept might fly better now than Montana in the 50’s, when men were men, and sheep were nervous.

The entire film teeters on a flimsy premise; that George, with all of his experience in law enforcement, would cave in to Margaret’s emotionally-driven mission to reconnect with her grandson, to the point of kidnapping if necessary.
