Can you please explain to me why the Wheboys had so much clout in their town? The sheriff is doing heavy lifting for them. Why? In this movie they do not appear to be rich, gangsters, nothing. They are portrayed as trash. So why would the sheriff be in their pocket?

From what I understood, I think the Wheboy's mother Blanche said they were 4th generation, meaning they were one of the original settlers in the town and possibly help create it. Also there were subtle clues that the clan was inbred (many of the member being everywhere around the area and I think Bill was involved with Blanche. He was coming out of her room in the middle of the night at the house when he was shown to own his own property). Plus the Blacklege's were seen as outsiders.
