Unbelievable part(s) (spoilers ahead)

I'll start by saying I liked this series, but there were a few poor things that stood out that range from "not realistic" to downright cringe-worthy:

1) Reacher has the physique of a bodybuilder, which requires CONSTANT workout sessions and careful dietary intake. Not only does Reacher never work out (hard to do when you're a "wanderer"), but we all see what he eats.

2) The whole Picard angle. Really?

3) Teale as a baddie. Pretty much assume that any time Bruce McGill is in a TV show, he's going to be on the bad side.

4) Photographic zoom at the coroner's office - hasn't this been done to death? We've seen for years in movies that pixelated images magically clear up, but I'd have thought that practice came to and end circa 2010. Nevertheless, it shows up here.

5) Would a blunt object in the shape of a diamond ever cause a slashing wound across the head, and then leave a distinct enough shape that it could be identified as a diamond? A step too far in the suspension of belief if you ask me...

1. In the books it's explained that he has a build like this without any training. It's not very realistic but at least it's faithful to the books.

Reacher strength was unbelievable, like breaking dead guy's bones easily with bare hands or being hit in the face with a crowbar without any permanent damage.

reply

Interesting. I hadn't read any of the books, so I didn't know that. It just stood out to me how defined Reacher's physique was in this series to the point where he was actually bodybuilding, and not just really strong. I suppose if they would have shown him doing sit ups, push ups, etc. during his down time, it could have been at least more plausible. Strangely, the series makes Finlay out to be the health-conscious weak guy, whereas Reacher is the junk food-eating ripped guy.

Its funny cause genetic freaks like him do exist and they also come in all height categories.

reply

If we're talking about a "genetic freak", it means they're not common at all, so saying they "come in all height categories" is somewhat contradictory. However, even setting that aside, you'd have to have a genetic freak who also happens to be quite tall and also happens to be expertly skilled in fighting techniques and expertly skilled in detective/observational skills.

So sure, it *could* exist, but there was simply no discussion in the movie about him being a genetic freak to begin with. The much more likely explanation was that he simply worked out a lot.

reply

Actually, it's not necessarily unrealistic at all. There actually is a rare genetic "disorder" that causes this: myostatin-related muscle hypertrophy. The condition is characterized by reduced body fat and increased muscle size. Affected individuals have up to twice the usual amount of muscle mass in their bodies, though at least one study (done on mice) showed that there is not necessarily a commensurate increase in strength. This condition is not known to cause any medical problems. Mutations in the MSTN gene cause myostatin-related muscle hypertrophy. People with a mutation in both copies of the gene (because they inherited it from both parents) have significantly increased muscle mass. People with a mutation in one copy of the MSTN gene in each cell (i.e. inherited from a single parent) also have increased muscle bulk but to a lesser degree.

So if Reacher has this condition from both parents, he might indeed look at least fairly close to what Alan Ritchson looks like from working out the way he did for this role. The question is, would he then be as strong as Reacher is supposed to be? Reacher, after all, is supposed to be even stronger than his great size would suggest, and as I said, there was one study that showed no corresponding increase in strength (and that tendons are no stronger than normal, which is a limiting factor). On the other hand, there are real people with this condition (e.g. Liam Hoekstra) who apparently are unusually strong (and have to eat a lot to support all that extra muscle mass).

In the book Reacher was tall and well built. He did not absorb the blows of a crowbar in the book like he did in the TV series.

reply

Yeah, that fight scene with repeated blows by a crowbar ... was so stupid and ridiculous it made me mad. I have a crowbar like that, I would not want to get hit by it once - it would do damage or kill someone. Not to mention the bad guy wielded it like it was made of styrofoam.

I'm not a big Tom Cruise fan, but I thought his first Jack Reacher movie was pretty good, and made more sense.

not always, but, yes, most of the time

That's a good point, but to me it illustrates the fascist nature of the state and its control into the media ... you reach children and stupid adults with fantasy images that are lies. Show junk food on TV, people go and buy junk food. Show doctors who care and work to save their patients, and not the reality of harried doctors having every minute of their time managed, and patients given 15 minutes to explain what is wrong while their doctors type facing a screen and not really listening, and then prescribing a drug to solve all patient's problems. Or the police who are beat cops, but doing detective work spending weeks or maybe months and years to solve those outstanding crimes, but never write a report of have a family life - except for a divorces wife.

Year by year these fake images sink into our reality because parents are too busy to parent so they leave their kids to be brought up in synthetic TV reality that teaches them to be mindless consumers.

And I don't believe this fact-
little Reacher had brown eyes, grown up Reacher has blue eyes...
And don't tell me it's because of his 'genetics'.
Typical american moviemakers carelessness...
PS
And what was also unbelievable funny- very skilled special ops soldier wins easy all combats against the other (ex) combat soldiers, but gets beaten up badly by the skinny punk with no martial arts skills...
