I think that the Italian city state that sat in front of that trail was in cahoots with the Ottomans and it's later shown that their leader warns the Ottoman's about Constantine's armies ahead of time.
The series itself glosses over a long story of intrigues, battles, and historical figures who played a major part in the story.
