Why was this kept as a secret until the last minute?

I've seen a few post about how it was kept secret, but I wonder what's the reason Vince G. kept it as a secret?

In this day and age I'd imagine it was to keep the plot as secretive as possible...and not have it all leak out.
(I just don't know how he managed to do it)

I can see getting the cast to keep quiet but how did he get the crew and extras and regular civilians living around the shooting location all zipped up.
He must have promised them unicorns and rainbows.

Also hype can bring a movie down quicker than anything.
Let it speak for itself.

The civilians most likely didn’t know what film they were extras in. When movies are filmed they filmed under code names not the actual name. Even then, it’s not like El Camino would make people think Breaking Bad anyway.
As for the scene in the diner with Walt and Jesse where it’ll be obvious it’s Breaking Bad related all those “extras” very well could’ve been crew members.
