Imagine instead of Olsen or Gadot...

there was a middle-aged guy who didn't use magic or a wishing stone. He just kidnapped some diner waitress because he wanted to resurrect his college girlfriend who died in a meth-lab explosion...

I wonder if we would have sympathized with his as much as we are supposed to with Wanda and Diana.

reply

What would be the purpose of the kidnapping though? What Wanda did was awful, but I don't believe her taking people hostage was a conscious decision in the beginning like kidnapping a single person would be.

reply

Wasn't a conscious decision?

She clearly breaks out of the fantasy world and attacks SWORD too:

Watching through the series again and in the beginning the Hex seems unintentional because Wanda seems in the dark about it as well. Not saying she didn't intentionally expand the Hex because she clearly did. I'm just talking about the first couple episodes where she doesn't really have a clue either.

reply

She did. Remember the "no" when the "beekeeper" emerged from the sewers?

She wasn't unconscious, she wasn't dreaming. She was fully in control.

Are there any middle-aged guys who CAN use a magic or a wishing stone?

Hmmm, let's try and reality that false equivalency up a bit. The magic could be, maybe some sweet-talk, lies or false promises and the Wishing Stone shall be a very expensive diamond.

But how does he resurrect his dead college girlfriend? But let's say he can. NO! Middle-aged man gets no sympathy. Why should he? What is the point that you are trying to make with this weirdly constructed word game?

Inquiring minds want to know!

reply

Just because you sympathize with someones feelings doesn't mean you sympathize with their actions.

reply

Bingo!

That's one of the things I liked about the series, it was rather morally complex for a comic-book story - instead of good guys vs. bad guys the characters were comple and flawed. The moral struggle of the main characters wasn't to beat the bad guys, it was to figure out how to do right when things weren't clear cut.

And it was the weirdest fucking thing I've seen in years. I loved it!

Imagine if instead of eating a burger there was a guy who didn't have a burger and just smashed a plate on the floor because he wanted a burger.

That's about how much sense this comparison makes.

reply

Yawn.

Imagine if instead of whatever dude first made that joke about innocent stormtroopers dying on the Death Star there was a joke about Rocky from Superman 2.

I wonder if we would still be getting these same lame pseudo intellectual observations of every premise in fantasy films / TV shows.

reply

It were handled quite well in Wandavision where it's obvious that even though there were no malicious intent, what she is doing is not ok and she realizes that throughout.

It is handled very weird in WW1984 where they kind of kill a man and they joke about it and never even mention what personal consequenses the wish had for people.

reply

What did you do? Come on, let her go, she's innocent lol
