Well Marvel has been mixing up the moods of their superhero movies, from the dark earnestness of "Captain America: Winter Soldier" to the hilarious weirdness of "Thor: Ragnarok", and everything in between. So I guess they thought it was time for a return to the serious end of the superhero spectrum, and I suppose that suited the source material. The main characters are very old and very lonely, non-humans stuck on Earth and mostly estranged from each other, it's not like they'd be in a mood to crack jokes.
Still, the movie did need something to lighten up the glumness, something weird or absurd happening, something that would startle characters who think they've seen it all and amuse the audience.
