One quibble I had with the film (slight spoilers)

Is the opening scene has marta discovering the body and showing genuine shock, when she already knew exactly what she would find as she saw him with the slit throat the night before. This was a cheap attempt to throw us off Marta as a central figure in the crime for the first third of the movie and should have been done better IMO. Other than that, it had the typical overly convoluted plot of the whodunnit genre. While not a bad film, I think the praise for the film is due more to casting a latina as the lead (the beuatiful Ana de Armas) than the film being great in its own right. However, to treat this casting choice as trailblazing, we would have to ignore the fact that actresses like Selma Hayek, Eva Mendes, Rosario Dawson, and Penelope Cruz have been around for decades.

That wasn't Marta.

reply

You're correct. It was the housekeeper, I believe.

reply

Yes, the housekeeper. Fran, I think.

It was the housekeeper Fran that discovered the body at the beginning of the film, not Marta. Not sure how that could be confused. They look nothing alike.

As for the movie's praise, part of it probably has to do with Ana de Armas, but if it was just the casting of a Latina in the lead role, it would not be sitting so highly on review sites and the difference between user reviews and critical reviews would be much larger.

Also Chris Evans was great too in his role. I don't really like the movie myself, especially because of Daniel Craig ridiculous character (the movie itself was ridiculous all around to be fair) but the casting of a latina I don't think it matters a lot. It was just a fun little movie, nothing to be seriously dissected and analysed.
