Interesting plot contrivance of just plain gross?

Both. That’s right. But it’s mostly the former, ‘far as I’m concerned (Rian detractors in particular disagree with that... oooh).

I’ll go with both, but mainly the latter. They put that in for the final scene. They could have made it something less gross, like fainting.
