Did RJ really say that one can totally erase the other? Not likely. Even a giant loudspeaker on full blast with the tape sitting on top of it wouldn't be able to totally erase it.
Once again, like Star Wars, RJ simply doesn't understand physics.
It didn't have to erase it, and I don't think they said it did. It was simply scrambled enough so it couldn't be used. They couldn't tell if a car had left and which car it was.
shareA foot away even a strong magnet won't affect the tape. The movie does imply that she stick the magnet directly at the tape.
Although I do question the strength of a fridge magnet.
I once "unformatted" a hard drive with a car speaker magnet. I didn't have much effect until I spun up the drive. So relative motion is required.
